Sebadoh is playing Bowery Ballroom 8/22, and releasing a new EP

When we heard news that quintessential indie trio Sebadoh were heading back into the studio to record their first batch of new songs in TWELVE YEARS, we sort of went crazy and told off our bosses and spent all of our savings and stopped going to the gym and ended up moving back into our parents' houses. It was a downward spiral that was bound to take place sooner or later. But I digress.

Though it's looking like a new Sebadoh LP won't be finished until early 2013, our good friend The Backstage Rider tells us that a batch of songs--separate from the LP--will be released as an EP before an east coast tour that begins August 7! That tour will hit Bowery Ballroom on August 22, and you can find all tour dates below. Tickets for the 8/22 show will go on sale Thursday at 12pm. In addition to Sebadoh headlining, the openers are Lou Barlow solo and Circle of Buzzards (aka Jason Loewenstein and Bob D'amico of Sebadoh). It's a full on Sebanight.

Hey! Felt like a pretty slow news day today, but the stuff that DID happen is great. I ate a couple of Jolly Ranchers today, but that's not really music news - the following is though:

• Jason Loewenstein and Bob D'Amico flew out to LA today to join Lou Barlow in the studio to record THE FIRST NEW SEBADOH ALBUM IN 13 YEARS!! Yes to THAT (The Backstage Rider)


• Can is releasing The Lost Tapes on June 19 via Mute, a three-disc box set made from 30+ hours of unreleased songs recorded between 1968 and 1977 recently discovered as the legendary krautrockers' old studio was being disassembled. Keyboardist Irmin Schmidt and collaborator Jono Podmore will discuss and perform tracks from The Lost Tapes at a celebratory event at Le Poisson Rouge on April 17, so be sure to get tickets to that for the ridiculously low price of $10 (Pitchfork)


• Future Nostalgia heroes The Big Sleep have announced a late Spring / early Summer US tour with Maps and Atlases and Fang Island, bringing them back to The Studio At Webster Hall on May 21. Damn right you should get a ticket (The Big Sleep)

We woke up Sunday morning to find that a thick mist had descended on Minehead. The turrets of the pavilion that were so distinct against yesterday’s bright blue sky had all but disappeared against the white mist. We awoke slowly, already reminiscing about the last two days and recalling that David Yow had said on stage that Boredoms were, and I quote, “The best fucking thing I’ve ever seen!” We began to get excited about their impending set. I made breakfast in our accommodation while we watched A Brief History of Time on Jeff Mangum TV and waited for the bands to start up.

Sentridoh's "Weed Forestin'" Reissue Available Starting Tomorrow, Stream It Now

About a month back, we very excitedly reported the news that Real FN Hero Lou Barlow (pictured with a sweet cat t-shirt) had confirmed that both of his major beloved bands, Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr., would have new albums out by the end of this year or the beginning of 2013. A month, a badass cruise, and several awesome tweets later, the Dino Jr. album is well underway, but as we look forward to more indie rock goodness out of Team Barlow we can look back on a critical piece of the bands' history that will be available in a new form tomorrow.

Sebadoh / Dino Jr. true believers are familiar with the long and weird history of Weed Forestin', the 1987 cassette-based album released under the Sentridoh moniker when Barlow was the kid pictured above. Weed's getting quite the kickass reissue treatment: starting tomorrow (Valentine's Day aww), you can grab a digital version of the album on Bandcamp for a mere $6 or buy it on limited-edition vinyl for $15, to be shipped by March 27. There will also be a deluxe LP edition available for preorder featuring Weed Forestin' in its entirety along with a cassette of Child of the Apocalypse - a newly-released collection of unreleased songs, early demos, and tape collages from the same era - AND a USB drive with uncompressed audio from both releases and a stop motion short film based on several of Weed's songs by London artist Darryl Walker that were last (not) seen on an unplayable VHS tape sent to Barlow over a decade ago.

Yeah it's a pretty huge project, and there are more formats available in which to pick it up listed on Bandcamp. You can also go ahead and stream all 23 tracks of Weed Forestin' below right now, as well as check out Walker's video for the classic "Brand New Love."

Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh have new albums on the way, both about to play Weezer Cruise

What a fantastic time to be a fan of Lou Barlow's various musical endeavors. A mere ten years ago, few would have expected that you'd one day be able to catch both Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh live in 2011, yet we did just that multiple times throughout last year. And though we've already witnessed the release of two fine albums by the reformed Dinosaur Jr., word comes straight from Barlow that yet another new Dinosaur album is on the way in a new interview in Miami New Times. Lou told us that work on a new album was imminent last time we spoke with him, but now he confirms that the band will in fact be hitting the studio in February.

The more exciting news is that Barlow's other project Sebadoh will begin recording an album's worth of new material following the Dinosaur sessions, making it their first album in thirteen years! Head over to our friend The Backstage Rider for more exclusive details on the project, which is slated to be released late 2012 or early 2013. I speak for Sebadoh fans everywhere... this fucking rocks. More details as they unravel will be posted here, so definitely check back for updates on the record.

Dinosaur Jr. Putting Out Limited 3-Album "Cassette Trilogy"

Let's be very clear here: selling cassette tapes in 2011 is totally weird. I say that even as I link to our Etsy store, where we do in fact sell cassette tapes in 2011. That being said, though, cassette tapes from our favorite bands in this day and age are still weirdly awesome, and Dinosaur Jr. is apparently fully aware of that fact.

That's why they've just announced that they're releasing a new 3-album collection called the Cassette Trilogy, containing each album from the classic Dinosaur Jr. canon - Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug - on, you guessed it, cassette tapes, via Joyful Noise Recordings. The tapes will come packaged in a custom-built, screen-printed wooden box, and the set will be limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.

The collection will come out on December 13 and only cost $39, which will leave you with enough scratch to pick up a gently-used Walkman from eBay to play the tapes on. Have at it!

UPDATE: We've just learned that, in honor of the original You're Living All Over Me being packaged with the first Sebadoh cassette (Weed Forestin'), one in 10 of these new boxes will also come with a copy of Weed Forestin'! Very cool! And in a very psychic move (unless they saw our Walkman joke earlier... hi!), Joyful Noise is selling Coby cassette players for $20 along with the box sets. After playing Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ the night before, Sebadoh took to Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday to play a triumphant homecoming gig (both Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico reside in Brooklyn), which also happened to be the final date on their tour. The show, much like the night before, was heavy on material from the Bakesale album, though they were sure to play favorites from Sebadoh III (“The Freed Pig”), Bubble and Scrape (“Soul and Fire” and “Sister”) and Harmacy (“On Fire” and “Ocean”).

"LESS ROCK!"

Or was it "LET'S ROCK!"? That's what some drunk little kid in the middle of the crowd at Maxwell's yelled out at least five times as Sebadoh took the stage Friday night. No one, not even Lou Barlow (who the heckles were apparently directed towards), could make sense of it.

"It's funny, usually when I get heckled it's by someone I know," Barlow responded after several inane comments such as "that's a really cool guitar," and "I didn't know you played guitar," and--my personal favorite, "who's Jake?"

Barlow was clearly annoyed but that didn't stop the band from putting on a great fucking show at Maxwell's Friday night, the best venue in New Jersey as far as I'm concerned. Blasting through the majority of Bakesale, which its reissue I assume they're still touring behind, Sebadoh sounded just as raw and intense as you would hope. Their current drummer, Bob D'Amico, breathes new life into this batch of songs--tracks like "S. Soup" and "Give Up" sound even more hardcore than they do on recording, sped up for sure, but not sloppy at all.

Sebadoh Return To NYC/NJ This Weekend To Rock Our Faces Off + ATP In March

One of the very first shows we covered on this site was Sebadoh at Bowery Ballroom in April, which was subsequently the last time they were in New York City. And now that they’re coming back, we’re pretty thrilled. If you’re in the New York City area, you have two opportunities to catch the band this weekend. Tomorrow night Sebadoh will play Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ, and then on Saturday night they will melt faces in Brooklyn at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets are sold out for Maxwell’s but you can still nab one for MHOW.

My pick of the two goes to Maxwell’s--mainly because I just love that venue, it’s incredibly small, and the sound is pretty phenomenal. Check Craigslist for people getting rid of extras. But if you’re too lazy to take the 10 minute bus ride out to Jersey, then you’re better off sticking to Brooklyn (you lazy, lazy person). Anyway – we’ll be covering both shows, so be sure to check back for photos and reviews. We have our fingers crossed for new material (at least that’s what Lou semi-promised when I spoke to him in May), so we’ll be sure to report back to you on that.

And don’t forget, Sebadoh is still confirmed to play the Jeff Mangum-curated ATP in Minehead as announced earlier today. Tickets--for those who didn’t already purchase them before the original December dates were cancelled-- are on sale now.

Sebadoh announces US tour, playing Music Hall 11/12

We’ve been following lo-fi legends Sebadoh pretty closely this year, mainly because they’re awesome, but also because they’ve been keeping very busy. Though their performance at the Belgian Pukkelpop festival was cancelled due to the unfortunate stage collapse that tragically killed four concertgoers, Sebadoh went on to play a benefit show for the victims on August 20, as well as a benefit show last night for the PIAS warehouse that went on fire last month during the London riots. The band still have a few more dates in the UK, and now they’ve announced that they’ll soon be playing a slew of US dates.

On November 12, Sebadoh will play Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. You can check out the rest of the band’s dates below, courtesy of our good friend The Backstage Rider. Speaking of which, we already told you about part one of her recent tour diary with the ‘Doh, but now you can also check out parts two and three on Mikala’s very addictive blog so get to it! Part three is particularly entertaining, if only for a story in which Lou Barlow’s pants fall off of a windowsill.

Waaaaay back in, um... April, we contacted The Backstage Rider (a.k.a. Mikala) to get press access to Sebadoh's Bowery Ballroom show as she handles the band's publicity. The idea was that we wanted to launch Fucking Nostalgic with coverage of a really great band that represented exactly what we were going for, and Mikala made that happen for us without hesitation.

We've kept in touch since, even collaborating on the amazing Dinosaur Jr. show that went down in June (coverage here and here), and now we want to point you in the direction of part one of her entertaining recent trip with Sebadoh in Germany. Included you'll find plenty of candid photos, a video of them playing "Forced Love" in Berlin and the crazy setlist of that very show. Get to it!

In other Sebadoh news, the band will be on tour across the globe until the beginning of October, before playing the Jeff Mangum-curated All Tomorrow's Parties in Minehead, UK (alongside The Fall, Low, Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control) in December. Then in January, Sebadoh will play that wacky Weezer Cruise we mentioned back in July. Did anyone actually get tickets to that?

And in lesser-related Sebadoh news, head to Slicing Up Eyeballs to listen to a cover of Neil Young's "I've Been Waiting For You" by Dinosaur Jr. that was just unveiled by Lou Barlow. Yeah.

Weezer, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Gene Ween & more will play the Weezer Cruise

In what appears to be some sort of weird surreal dream I might've had as a fifteen-year old high on NyQuil, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, and Gene Ween will share the bill with many, many more, for the Weezer Cruise, which will take place from January 19-23 of 2012. The four day festival, which will also feature younger (and amazing) acts such as the Antlers, Yuck, Wavves, the Nervous Wreckords (featuring Brian Karscig of Louis XIV) and Boom Bip, will sail from Miami, FL to Cozumel, Mexico in one epic, unadulterated, wacky sea adventure in the name of indie rock. The website specifically states that bands will play multiple performances.

In addition to J Mascis and Lou Barlow performing in their respective bands, the two will perform solo sets throughout the cruise, meaning Lou Barlow will be pulling triple duty (Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, and solo). I hope the guy packs his Dramamine. You can get the exact details of the pricing scheme over at the Weezer Cruise website, but the most basics I can find are that tickets will be sold individually at $799/person or at $599/person if you travel as a group of four. Pricey for sure, but not when you consider the fact that you will be on a cruise ship with some indisputable rock gods. If I get to share a beer with Lou Barlow, and high-five Gene Ween, then it's totally worth it.

Just Gimme Indie Rock! documentary needs your help

When I spoke to Lou Barlow last month, I asked him what he thought the connection was between the current indie scene and the underground indie movement he was a part of in the '80s. His response: "I just think it’s like one continuous thing. You know, we were what they are, which were young people synthesizing our influences and making music."

Oddly enough, the day I posted that interview was the same day documentary filmmaker Brad Katz launched his Kickstarter campaign to raise enough funds to bring Just Gimme Indie Rock! The Story of an Underground Uprising to the big screen. The film, which hopes to "be the first to connect the dots between these divergent eras of indie, revealing the single greatest rock and roll story never told," will feature artists over the past three decades, including Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, Elliott Smith... well, basically every artist we cover at Fucking Nostalgic will be covered in the film. So far, the project has raised close to $8,000 of its $75,000 goal, and currently has 63 days left to meet that goal. They need your help to bring this ambitious and guaranteed-to-be-amazing movie to life.

As of right now, the $75,000 goal is just "Phase 1 Financing" as a way to ramp up production, in which afterwards they hope to hit up traditional investors to complete the project. As an incentive to those who contribute, there are gifts one will receive depending on the amount they pledge. For example, a $10 pledge will get your name added to the website's list of contributors while a $10,000 contribution will give you producer-like access to shoots, interviews, festivals and premiers. No matter what you contribute, your help is clearly needed and appreciated.

Personally, I think the documentary is a story that needs to be told, and I'm really hoping they raise enough funds to make it happen. Fucking Nostalgic will be covering this project along the way, and we even hope to be a part of it on a grander scale.

Interview: Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr., Folk Implosion)

By the time J Mascis retired the Dinosaur Jr. name in 1997, few music fans would have guessed that one day you'd be able to catch them on the road again, let alone with original bassist and co-founder Lou Barlow. Now six years deep into the reunion of original members Mascis, Murph and Barlow, Dinosaur Jr. have released two critically acclaimed albums, Beyond and Farm, and are about to embark on a tour performing their third album Bug in its entirety (tickets are still on sale for the 6/23 NYC date). Henry Rollins will also interview the band onstage as part of the show.

Barlow's other band Sebadoh recently finished an East coast tour in April in support of the upcoming Bakesale reissue (which you can preorder here), a deluxe edition of the classic album that will be released on June 14th on Sub Pop. In September, Sebadoh will head to Australia for the first time in twelve years for a few performances. I had the chance to talk to Lou over the phone on Monday about the upcoming Dinosaur Jr. tour, new Sebadoh material, and the awesomeness of the Jesus & Mary Chain's Psychocandy.

Classic lo-fi band Sebadoh played the Bowery Ballroom twice this past weekend, and I probably would have gone to both shows had I not been at the Dead Milkmen's crazy show on Saturday night. Either way, I got a full dose of nostalgia in this weekend; Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein and latest addition Bob D'Amico did not disappoint on Sunday night (4/10). Though the show probably would have been shorter had Barlow not spent most of his time dissing New York City (though I'm sure it was tongue-in-cheek) we still got a set full of hits, including Bakesale's "Not Too Amused" & "Magnet's Coil", as well as an excellent rendition of III's "The Freed Pig". It was the last show of Sebadoh's tour, and Barlow mentioned we'd probably not see them again until the end of the year, but promised new material when that time comes around.

Barlow will however be in town again when he plays with Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5 on 6/23. Henry Rollins will be interviewing the band on stage, which is sure to be an awkward and hilarious affair. Tickets are still on sale. Full set of photos of Sebadoh's Sunday show at Bowery Ballroom are below!
