FN News Roundup: March 29, 2012

Sebadoh @ Bowery Ballroom, 4/10/11

Hey! Felt like a pretty slow news day today, but the stuff that DID happen is great. I ate a couple of Jolly Ranchers today, but that's not really music news - the following is though:

  • Jason Loewenstein and Bob D'Amico flew out to LA today to join Lou Barlow in the studio to record THE FIRST NEW SEBADOH ALBUM IN 13 YEARS!! Yes to THAT (The Backstage Rider)

  • Can is releasing The Lost Tapes on June 19 via Mute, a three-disc box set made from 30+ hours of unreleased songs recorded between 1968 and 1977 recently discovered as the legendary krautrockers' old studio was being disassembled. Keyboardist Irmin Schmidt and collaborator Jono Podmore will discuss and perform tracks from The Lost Tapes at a celebratory event at Le Poisson Rouge on April 17, so be sure to get tickets to that for the ridiculously low price of $10 (Pitchfork)

  • Future Nostalgia heroes The Big Sleep have announced a late Spring / early Summer US tour with Maps and Atlases and Fang Island, bringing them back to The Studio At Webster Hall on May 21. Damn right you should get a ticket (The Big Sleep)

  • Check out another new track from De La Soul side project First Serve, "We Made It," after the jump! The self-titled debut LP is out on April 3 (Consequence of Sound)

  • Know what else is after the jump? The trailer for The Walkmen's new album, Heaven, coming out on June 5 via Fat Possum (Beats Per Minute)

And in honor of the love-fest that is Valentine's Day, they've released an awesomely creepy music video for Nature track "Valentine." Turn your moodlighting back up, give your R. Fucking Nostalgic Films: The Big Sleep @ The Knitting Factory Brooklyn

The Big Sleep @ The Knitting Factory Brooklyn - February 2, 2012
Video: Nadia Chaudhury and Chris / Photos: Chris

On Thursday night in Williamsburg, The Big Sleep celebrated the release of their very excellent new album Nature Experiments, which was just released on January 31 on Frenchkiss Records (stream it on Spotify). The album is the band's first LP since 2008's Sleep Forever, and is by far the most accessible and catchy material I've heard from them yet. Be sure to preorder the vinyl copy, which will be released by Goodnight Records on February 14.

Thursday's show was somewhat of a warmup to an upcoming tour for the Brooklyn band that begins early in March, which will find them playing down the east coast and eventually heading over to Austin's SXSW Festival (all tour dates below).

Wondering how the show was? Well, Nadia and I had the opportunity to film The Big Sleep for our brand new Fucking Nostalgic Films series, so watch them perform their newest single "Ace" below the jump along with some photos from the show as well!

The Big Sleep releasing new album Tuesday, playing Knitting Factory Thursday (2/2)

Last month, we had the opportunity to check out Brooklyn-based indie band The Big Sleep film footage for a new music video at The Fort in anticipation of their upcoming album Nature Experiments. The album is their first release since 2008's Sleep Forever, and from what I heard them play that night, Nature Experiments is going to be a really exciting record. As a collaboration between Frenchkiss Records and Goodnight Records (Goodnight is handling the vinyl release), you can preorder the album from iTunes for its release on Tuesday (1/31) and the vinyl release over here. The vinyl won't be released until February 14, but comes in both single and deluxe versions.

To celebrate the album's release, The Big Sleep will be performing a hometown show at the Knitting Factory on Thursday (2/2), for which some tickets are still available. Be sure to pick up a pair and see the band perform some new songs, and hopefully they still have "Murder" in their repertoire. Check out the tracklist for Nature Experiments, a video for the album's awesome first single "Ace," and the Big Sleep's upcoming shows below...

Photos: The Big Sleep @ The Fort (Music Video Shoot)

The Big Sleep @ The Fort - December 8, 2011

Last week, Colin and I had the opportunity to bear witness to Brooklyn's The Big Sleep film footage for a new music video, in anticipation for their upcoming album Nature Experiments (out January 31, 2012 on Frenchkiss Records [digital] and Goodnight Records [physical]). It was special not only because of the intimacy of watching a really great band perform in a relatively small loft studio, but also it happened to be the same studio where my band recorded our first full length album (yes, a shameless self promotion... not common on these pages).

The Fort in Bushwick, Brooklyn has long held the reputation for being a great sounding affordable studio for indie bands in New York City, but this video shoot marked the beginning of what is hopefully a trend of killer bands performing intimate in-studio shows for fans, and having it all filmed and recorded in pristine quality. Take a look at more photos below, and be on the lookout for The Big Sleep's new video and album... their new songs sounded sick.
