So this is it. The end of an end of an era.

I can wholeheartedly say that for me, this really is the end of an era. I have attended seventeen UK ATP festivals over the last thirteen years. I was here at Pontins in 2000 at the first ever ATP festival curated by Mogwai. Ever since then ATP's UK holiday camp festivals have been a fundamental akin to nourishment or warmth. And I genuinely mean that. Why else would I have repeatedly reached into my pocket, scraping together all my resources in order to purchase tickets for a just-announced event that had no announced line up? Needless to say when the End Of An Era events were announced it was a no-brainer. I was going to be there!

Friday.

Having been here just a week earlier, with Fucking Nostalgic's head honcho Chris and his fiancée Jen (at End Of An Era Part One), our already well honed ATP travel routine runs like a dream and we make it to Pontins 15 minutes before they open the gates. There are no bands on for 5 hours or so, but anyone who's been in one of those chalets in December will tell you it's worth getting there early to warm it up before the sun goes down. That and the fact that I'm really going to miss this place, this experience and the feeling of community at these events. So I'm here early and I'm going to luxuriate in this feeling one last time. As I approach the check-in desk the lovely ATP ladies inform me that we are the first chalet to book in and snap a quick photo of my grinning mug. I win!

All things must pass. Even festivals that strive to provide an overwhelmingly enjoyable experience in addition to some of the best music lineups known to mankind. In the past thirteen years, UK promotors All Tomorrow's Parties have put on legendary festivals all over the world, but it's their original three-day series at Pontins Holiday Camp in Camber Sands that started it all, and set the template for what a music festival can and should be. And with good reason. Part one of their End of an Era series, curated by Primavera Sound and ATP, provided three of the most memorable days of my life.

Some background on our journey to our first UK ATP festival. My fiancee Jennifer and I decided to take the plunge and make a trip to London after finally meeting FN's London contributor Rhona and her wife Niki back in October, following a two year online correspondance with them. Of all the experiences I've had since creating this blog in 2011, getting to meet people as obsessed with music as I am has been the most rewarding. Rhona and Niki have been to numerous ATP Festivals, and considering the End of An Era series would be the last at Pontins, they were of course attending both weekends. Everything fell into place when Rhona informed me that there was room for the two of us in the 4-person chalet for Part One of End of An Era. Five weeks later we found ourselves on a red eye flight to London, the next morning driving to Camber Sands in a car packed with food, a couple cases of Sapporo cider and a big bottle of Apple Schnapps (more on that later).

ATP: End of an Era Part I stage times revealed

As many are already aware, the much loved All Tomorrow’s Parties festivals are coming to a close this year, with the final two festivals taking place over two consecutive weekends at Pontins Holiday Camp in Camber Sands, UK. End of an Era Part 1 Curated by ATP & Primavera Sound goes down next weekend, November 22-24, while End of An Era Part 2 curated by ATP & Loop will take place November 29 – December 1. Both are now sold out.

For over a decade, the promoters at ATP have put together some of the finest and eclectic lineups in festival history, carefully selecting acts that cater to a very specific demographic, rejecting any form of corporate sponsorship, and maintaining a reputation for providing a highly enjoyable experience. I personally have only attended one ATP festival in 2011 for the Portishead-curated I’ll Be Your Mirror in Asbury Park, but it still stands as one of my favorite festivals ever.

We here at FN will be mourning the loss of ATP upon its conclusion, specifically our London contributor Wiglet Bill (who attends ATP festivals annually and its spinoff festivals throughout the year). The good news (at least for our readers) is the Wiglet and I are teaming up next weekend to cover End of an Era Part I, and will be photographing the event for FN, as well as tweeting the event on our Twitter account, @fuckingnostalgi. Today, ATP announced stage times for next weekend, which includes a meaty-looking Saturday lineup (Television, Les Savy Fav, GY!BE and Dinosaur Jr. in a row), with only a few time clashes throughout the three days. Shellac to curate ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas in December

And yet another ATP festival in London to get excited about. As stated this morning on ATP’s website, Shellac will curate the upcoming annual Nightmare Before Christmas festival (Battles, Caribou and Les Savy Fav curated last year’s). Read more info below…

ATP Concerts, who last month announced our return to the festival's original home - the recently refurbished Pontins holiday camp in Camber Sands - now announce a second festival weekend for this December to precede the now sold out weekend curated by The National. Following that event's sell out, Pontins have offered ATP a second weekend and after receiving many emails enquiring about whether we would run one of our traditional Nightmare Before Christmas events, we are very happy to announce the return of SHELLAC OF NORTH AMERICA to headline and curate from the 30th November-2nd December 2012 to help celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band.

SHELLAC curated one of ATP's earliest events 10 years ago this year, at which they introduced the Camber Sands audience to bands including Bonnie Prince Billy, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Smog and Low. As one of the most incendiary live rock bands on the planet, having released four stellar albums and having stunned crowds on every hemisphere, Shellac and ATP's long relationship has often seen them called the festival's House Band, and it gives us great pleasure to bring them back as curators for what is set to be a very exciting line-up, the first artists of which will be announced soon. Shellac Of North America are Steve Albini, Bob Weston and Todd Trainer.

We will undoubtedly have coverage of the festival so stay tuned for that. No lineup has been announced yet, but tickets go on sale tomorrow 10am London time.

Arriving at London’s Alexandra Palace for day two of IBYM 2012, it is immediately apparent that it is much quieter than day one. Obviously there aren’t many things louder than Slayer yesterday, but there are many fewer people around today. As I gaze at the time card for today’s shows I notice that the Great Hall where Melvins, Sleep and Slayer played yesterday isn’t being used today. Rather, yesterday’s ‘B venue’ The West Hall is now the main stage and a second stage has been set up in the Panorama Room.
As there is a small wait before the bands begin, we decided to locate the Panorama Room since we had no idea where it was. When we found the room we were relieved that no one we really wanted to see was playing in there. The clue is most definitely in the title “Panorama Room”: It was a long narrow room, with one long side made up almost entirely of windows, looking out over the park. Whilst it was a lovely view, it was incredibly bright in there, especially since London was undergoing a heat-wave.

We left the Panorama room and crossed over into West Hall to check out Umberto, billed as ‘horror score creep-scapes for the digital age’. I must admit it didn’t float my boat, perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood. Aware that there were extra curricular activities to be enjoyed in the park we decided to take a look at the boating lake (which was lovely) and vowed to return for Floor.

On a beautiful sunny Friday we made our way to north London’s Alexandra Palace for this years ATP sister event I’ll Be Your Mirror. The doors open at 4pm, but we have come for early check-in at 2pm. We are provided our wristbands and have two hours to enjoy a cool drink in the lush parkland surrounding the palace on this unseasonably warm May afternoon.

When the doors open we file into the Palm Court entrance (named so because of the indoor palms growing there) and unsurprisingly it is oppressively hot inside. After briefly checking out the merchandise stands we head back out into the park to the relative cool, to pass the time until the first act of the weekend take the stage.

We woke up Sunday morning to find that a thick mist had descended on Minehead. The turrets of the pavilion that were so distinct against yesterday’s bright blue sky had all but disappeared against the white mist. We awoke slowly, already reminiscing about the last two days and recalling that David Yow had said on stage that Boredoms were, and I quote, “The best fucking thing I’ve ever seen!” We began to get excited about their impending set. I made breakfast in our accommodation while we watched A Brief History of Time on Jeff Mangum TV and waited for the bands to start up.

At 10.30am my phone rings, firmly waking me from the slumber the seagulls have been attempting to draw me out of since around 6am with their incessant squawking. It’s my friend who lives in Minehead inviting me out for breakfast in the local ‘Hairy Dog’ pub. After explaining that I’d had little or no sleep and that there was absolutely zero chance of me dragging my sorry self from my bed, I hung up the phone to find that I was unable to go back to sleep. Over an hour and a half later my wife finally woke up and after some breakfast and a bit of ‘Jeff Mangum TV’ we finally noticed that it was turning out to be a spectacularly beautiful day outside.

We headed out of the accommodation for a walk in the sun, through the rows of chalets, on toward the meringue turrets of the skyline pavilion, brilliant white against the cloudless morning sky. We decide to head inside to see if any new and exciting merch had arrived, stopping on the way to take in the awesome ATP mosaic by Shannon McLean (a rendering of the cover of the Neutral Milk Hotel record In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, seen above).

I’ve been attending ATP’s festivals here in the UK for over ten years now and I can honestly say that never have I waited so eagerly and so long from ticket purchase to the event itself. The sheer brilliance of the line up could have only added to the panic among ticket holders when it was announced a couple of months before the originally scheduled date of the festival in December that it was to be postponed until this past weekend. The lingering mystery surrounding the postponement did nothing to settle fears as to whether the event would actually take place, perhaps because the line up was turning out to be so very awesome it might literally have been too good to be true.

But none of that matters now we are neared the end of our 235 mile journey from the suburbs of south London to the charming West Somerset seaside town of Minehead. The Butlin’s resort where the festival is held is nestled right on the promenade facing the beach and the Bristol Channel.

After a quick stop for supplies at the local supermarket, we headed to the check-in as it opened and then to our accommodation and got settled in. Each apartment comes with a television that provides two channels of television programming, the content of one being chosen by the curator, and the other by ATP. As the bands weren’t to begin for almost three hours we watched a couple of hours of Monty Python’s Flying Circus as chosen by Jeff Mangum.

fIREHOSE reunited, are touring and releasing anthology collection

We haven't posted any news on the fIREHOSE reunion since it was announced they would be playing Coachella and touring around the two-weekend festival. Shame on us. But now that news comes via Pitchfork that Columbia/Legacy will be releasing a two-disc set entitled lowFLOWS: the Columbia anthology ('91-'93) on April 3, I am taking the opportunity to finally get a post out about the band. Forgive me!

The collection will include the band's 1991 album Flyin' the Flannel, the Live Totem Pole EP and the 1993 album Mr. Machinery Operator, complete with bonus tracks from the era. Check out the complete tracklist below.

In addition to the fIREHOSE reunion, both George Hurley and Mike Watt will be performing songs by the Minutemen at next weekend's All Tomorrow's Parties curated by Jeff Mangum in Minehead, UK. ATP I'll Be Your Mirror USA 2012 Festival Tickets On Sale Today, You Should Buy Them

Guided By Voices Cancelled ATP IBYM London, Afghan Whigs Take Their Spot & Are Curating ATP IBYM Asbury Park

We were worried for a solid hour that Guided By Voices were no more after an announcement was made claiming they cancelled their headlining appearance at ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror London. But frontman Robert Pollard has reportedly denied those claims, stating that the show was cancelled due to personal reasons, but they still are a functioning unit. Not only that, but they’re working on another album, entitled Class Clown Spots a UFO. That’s right, two new albums from our favorite lo-fi outfit.

In related (and extremely exciting news), acclaimed indie/soul act The Afghan Whigs have reunited and will be taking GBV’s slot at ATP IBYM London, playing their first show in thirteen years. Along with some other recent additions, including Archers of Loaf, Thee Oh Sees, Demdike Stare, Siskiyou and an additional performance by Yuck, the festival is gearing up to be a legendary three-day party.

For those in the New York City and New Jersey area, additional news to be excited about: ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror will return to Asbury Park again in September 2012, and Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs will be curating. As we continue to be jealous of everyone in the UK for all of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival goodness they've got coming up between now and summer 2012 ('sup Wiglet Bill), we've got another tasty bit of news to report on the most imminent of said festivals: ATP's annual Nightmare Before Christmas Festival, taking place from December 9-11 at Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead.

Following up on Dan Snaith's Caribou Mix, another of the Festival's co-headliners, the eternally weird Les Savy Fav, have put together one of their own featuring cuts from themselves and other great Festival acts like Archers of Loaf, Wild Flag, Marnie Stern, and No Age. Sebadoh Return To NYC/NJ This Weekend To Rock Our Faces Off + ATP In March

One of the very first shows we covered on this site was Sebadoh at Bowery Ballroom in April, which was subsequently the last time they were in New York City. And now that they’re coming back, we’re pretty thrilled. If you’re in the New York City area, you have two opportunities to catch the band this weekend. Tomorrow night Sebadoh will play Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ, and then on Saturday night they will melt faces in Brooklyn at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets are sold out for Maxwell’s but you can still nab one for MHOW.

My pick of the two goes to Maxwell’s--mainly because I just love that venue, it’s incredibly small, and the sound is pretty phenomenal. Check Craigslist for people getting rid of extras. But if you’re too lazy to take the 10 minute bus ride out to Jersey, then you’re better off sticking to Brooklyn (you lazy, lazy person). Anyway – we’ll be covering both shows, so be sure to check back for photos and reviews. We have our fingers crossed for new material (at least that’s what Lou semi-promised when I spoke to him in May), so we’ll be sure to report back to you on that.

And don’t forget, Sebadoh is still confirmed to play the Jeff Mangum-curated ATP in Minehead as announced earlier today. Tickets--for those who didn’t already purchase them before the original December dates were cancelled-- are on sale now.

ATP Continues To Blow Our Minds With The Rescheduled Jeff Mangum Lineup

Wow, All Tomorrow's Parties is absolutely killing it this week. While a lot of our British readers were bummed (or happy) about the postponement of ATP Curated By Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) in Minehead from December to March of next year, the promoters have today not only confirmed that a good number of the original acts will be soldiering on with the new March days, but that some exciting new acts have jumped onto the bill as well.

The new additions include The Magnetic Fields - making their ATP debut and a rare festival appearance - as well as '90s indie cult favorites Versus and Mangum's Elephant 6 Collective cohorts The Music Tapes. But the coolest update to the lineup is the return of Mike Watt & George Hurley performing the songs of the Minutemen, having had to cancel their original December appearance at the Festival.

Tickets are on sale on the ATP website, and we give the Minutemen a little hat tip after the jump. Fuck yeah.

All Tomorrow's Parties Announces I'll Be Your Mirror London 2012 Festival

What the WHAT?!

Oh, All Tomorrow's Parties. Your I'll Be Your Mirror Festival in Asbury Park, NJ feels like just yester(day 1, day 2, day 3). And today the venerable festival promoters have confirmed the second UK I'll Be Your Mirror event, to be held in London's Alexandra Palace from May 25-27, 2012.

And have they got some cool stuff planned for you Londoners. Not only is the festival curated by Mogwai (who we're still waiting to see in NYC...), but it'll be headlined by Guided By Voices (with new material!) and will feature Slayer performing Reign In Blood in its entirety on the first night of the festival. Other acts confirmed so far include Sleep, Melvins, the reunited Codeine (!!!!!), Mudhoney (!!), and easy Future Nostalgia contenders Yuck. Damn, you guys.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (11/11) at 10am GMT - check out ATP's page for a breakdown of single day and weekend pass prices. Oh, and did we mention there's a trailer for the Slayer portion of the event? Because there is, and you can check it out after the jump.

ATP Minehead has been postponed till March

For our readers in the UK, some unfortunate news regarding the upcoming ATP Festival in Minehead...

Thank you very much for buying tickets for ATP curated by Jeff Mangum. We're sorry to announce that due to a set of extremely unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances, this festival event is being postponed - the event will be rescheduled to March 9th-11th 2012 at the same location of Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead, UK.

We understand this will come as a shock and we sincerely apologise that we were not able to inform you before now - please know that we do not take this decision at all lightly. Having to reschedule an event like this is no small decision and we realise that many of you will be extremely disappointed, as are we. We try to put the community of ATP attendees first in every decision we make and hope that you will understand when we say that if the postponement was in any way avoidable, then we would not be rescheduling - disappointing the community that makes our events what they are is something we find very painful.

Portishead @ ATP I'll Be Your Mirror - October 1 & 2, 2011

We've posted days one, two and three of the very awesome All Tomorrow's Parties I'll Be Your Mirror Festival that just went down in Asbury Park, NJ, but we've yet to post any of headliners and curators Portishead. Save the best for last I suppose. Playing their first east coast shows in nearly a decade, the band stunned the crowd equally both nights with visceral and moving performances of songs such as "The Rip," "Glory Box" and "Machine Gun."

Sets were nearly identical on both nights, save for a few songs here and there. The first night was made special by frontwoman Beth Gibbons diving into the audience (as seen above) during their show closing rendition of "We Carry On," and the second night brought surprise cameo appearances by Public Enemy's Chuck D on "Machine Gun" and Simeon of Silver Apples, who performed synths on "We Carry On."

There was something very special about both performances, aside from them being the first east coast Portishead shows in a long time. Knowing that the band were behind handpicking a majority of the acts on the bill made you realize just how much many of those bands had directly influenced Portishead. It brought closure to both Saturday and Sunday and made for and incredibly cathartic end to each night.

Portishead will be here in New York City at Hammerstein Ballroom tomorrow night (10/4) and Wednesday (10/5), and both nights are sold out. Do whatever you can to get into these shows because they will definitely be the highlight of the fall. The third day of All Tomorrow's Parties I'll Be Your Mirror came to a close yesterday, but went out on a great note. After spending most of Saturday (and Friday) running back and forth from the two major stages, I decided to stay at Convention Hall most of Sunday and take in each act in full. Besides, I was able to meet Jeff Mangum and have him sign my passport and got to shake Flavor Flav's hand so those highlights certainly outweighed trying to see all ten acts that were scheduled.
