We woke up Sunday morning to find that a thick mist had descended on Minehead. The turrets of the pavilion that were so distinct against yesterday’s bright blue sky had all but disappeared against the white mist. We awoke slowly, already reminiscing about the last two days and recalling that David Yow had said on stage that Boredoms were, and I quote, “The best fucking thing I’ve ever seen!” We began to get excited about their impending set. I made breakfast in our accommodation while we watched A Brief History of Time on Jeff Mangum TV and waited for the bands to start up.

Hot on the heels of their new single "Myth" yesterday, Beach House has confirmed that they're releasing their fourth LP Bloom on May 15 via Sub Pop, as well as going on a tour this summer that'll include a July 23rd Central Park Summerstage slot! (Beats Per Minute)

New Zealand-based musician Annabel Alpers, who has been performing under the moniker of Bachelorette since 2004, released her self-titled album on Drag City in May of 2011 and is about to embark on a tour opening for the Magnetic Fields this month. The album is a synth-heavy, melodic and layered work that reminds me very much of Broadcast--and not only for Alpers' similarity to the late Trish Keenan's vocals, but the aesthetic of the two bands is very much the same. Psychedelic, colorful, ethereal--detailed yet minimilist. Yes, I am digging Bachelorette very much.
Though she won't be opening for Magnetic Fields when they play Beacon Theater in April, those of us in New York City are in luck, as Bachelorette will headline her own show at Cameo Gallery this Sunday (3/4)! Tickets are on sale right now for $10, so be sure to grab one while you still can.

Woohoo! We now have just a little over a month to wait until The Magnetic Fields' new album, Love At The Bottom Of The Sea, via Merge and a full-on Stephin Merritt World Domination Tour. Thankfully we've been getting cool updates and album teasers in the interim, and today we're pleased to share the new video for leadoff single "Andrew In Drag."
NPR premiered the video and advises that it contains nudity, but since you're reading a blog with the word "Fucking" in the title, we're sure you're probably okay with it. Watch after the jump, and get tickets to their upcoming Beacon Theatre show by any means necessary (except, like, murder or theft.)
As we previously reported, 2012 is going to be an awesome year for The Magnetic Fields and the many Stephin Merritt fans out there. Their new album, Love At The Bottom Of The Sea, is coming out on March 6, and the band will support it with a full-on tour that leads them through the Jeff Mangum-curated All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK, SXSW in Austin, and our own Beacon Theatre in April (tickets).

Oh HELL yes. There had been some stirring this year from The Magnetic Fields this year with the release of frontmind Stephen Merritt's Obscurities collection and the announcement that the band would be hopping on the bill for a rare festival appearance at the Jeff Mangum-curated All Tomorrow's Parties Minehead event this coming March. Well we've got even MORE great news - The Magnetic Fields will also be releasing their 10th studio album this coming March as well, which will be their first on Merge Records since 1999's excellent 69 Love Songs (Spotify).
Entitled Love At The Bottom Of The Sea and featuring the chicken-based cover art seen above, Merge is releasing the new album on March 6 and taking pre-orders... now. The first 300 LPs ordered will be pressed on limited edition eggshell vinyl, while all CD and Vinyl preorders will come with a Magnetic Fields poster and button. Giddyup.

Festival appearances aside, The Magnetic Fields will be back on tour this coming spring throughout North America and Europe, stopping by a Barnes and Noble here in NYC on March 8 right before they head to England to rock Minehead for ATP and then come back for the always-fun SXSW Festival in Austin, TX. They'll be back here again for a proper two-night Beacon Theatre residency on April 3 and 4. Ticket info for all shows can be found here; the pre-sale for the Beacon shows is happening right now and the general sale starts at 11am ET on Friday (12/16). Wow, All Tomorrow's Parties is absolutely killing it this week. While a lot of our British readers were bummed (or happy) about the postponement of ATP Curated By Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) in Minehead from December to March of next year, the promoters have today not only confirmed that a good number of the original acts will be soldiering on with the new March days, but that some exciting new acts have jumped onto the bill as well.
The new additions include The Magnetic Fields - making their ATP debut and a rare festival appearance - as well as '90s indie cult favorites Versus and Mangum's Elephant 6 Collective cohorts The Music Tapes. But the coolest update to the lineup is the return of Mike Watt & George Hurley performing the songs ofthe Minutemen, having had to cancel their original December appearance at the Festival.
Tickets are on sale on the ATP website, and we give the Minutemen a little hat tip after the jump. Fuck yeah.
Magnetic Fields mastermind and indie icon Stephin Merritt no doubt has a ton of cool material in his possession, and he's set to unleash a bunch more of it on August 23 when Merge releases his latest collection, Obscurities. That's exactly a week from now, but in case you can't wait our friend The Backstage Rider has tipped us to a full album stream at Paste Magazine posted as of this afternoon.
The collection consists of 14 rare and... wait for it... obscure tracks that Merritt created just prior to the sprawling 1999 Magnetic Fields' classic 69 Love Songs. Five of these tracks were previously unreleased (and three of these were from Song From Venus, his sci-fi musical), while “The Sun and the Sea and the Sky” is an outtake from 69 Love Songs itself.
