We're continually excited about any news out of the Dinosaur Jr. camp. Now, a little over two weeks after the band revealed their trippy album art and tracklist for upcoming album I Bet On Sky (out on September 18 via Jagjaguwar), we have our first taste - er, listen - to the LP in the form of "Watch The Corners."

Check it out on Rolling Stone over here - it's a scorching track for what's looking to be a scorching NYC summer day.

Dinosaur Jr. reveal new album title, artwork and tracklisting

dino

We’ve been aware for a while that a new Dinosaur Jr. record was imminent, and now it’s official. I Bet On Sky will be released on Jagjaguwar on September 18. That’s the amazingly awesome album art above, though that shouldn’t be a surprise. Dinosaur Jr. has always had aesthetically pleasing artwork. Check out the tracklisting below…

Sentridoh's "Weed Forestin'" Reissue Available Starting Tomorrow, Stream It Now

About a month back, we very excitedly reported the news that Real FN Hero Lou Barlow (pictured with a sweet cat t-shirt) had confirmed that both of his major beloved bands, Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr., would have new albums out by the end of this year or the beginning of 2013. A month, a badass cruise, and several awesome tweets later, the Dino Jr. album is well underway, but as we look forward to more indie rock goodness out of Team Barlow we can look back on a critical piece of the bands' history that will be available in a new form tomorrow.

Sebadoh / Dino Jr. true believers are familiar with the long and weird history of Weed Forestin', the 1987 cassette-based album released under the Sentridoh moniker when Barlow was the kid pictured above. Weed's getting quite the kickass reissue treatment: starting tomorrow (Valentine's Day aww), you can grab a digital version of the album on Bandcamp for a mere $6 or buy it on limited-edition vinyl for $15, to be shipped by March 27. There will also be a deluxe LP edition available for preorder featuring Weed Forestin' in its entirety along with a cassette of Child of the Apocalypse - a newly-released collection of unreleased songs, early demos, and tape collages from the same era - AND a USB drive with uncompressed audio from both releases and a stop motion short film based on several of Weed's songs by London artist Darryl Walker that were last (not) seen on an unplayable VHS tape sent to Barlow over a decade ago.

Yeah it's a pretty huge project, and there are more formats available in which to pick it up listed on Bandcamp. You can also go ahead and stream all 23 tracks of Weed Forestin' below right now, as well as check out Walker's video for the classic "Brand New Love."

Who loves ya, babies? We do. (Cheers to The Backstage Rider for the tip!)

J. Mascis Has A Bobblehead Doll, Is Releasing A Dinosaur Jr. Live DVD, & Is On The Weezer Cruise

There are a ton of honors that can be bestowed on a heralded member of the rock community - induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, top rankings on Best Of lists, yadda yadda. But you know you've REALLY made your mark when someone makes a bobblehead doll version of you, which is exactly what happened to the White Wizard of Indie Rock, J. Mascis.

Aggronautix, the "Proprietors of Fine Throbbleheads" (whoa gross), have created a limited-edition bobblehead of the Dinosaur Jr. cofounder that will ship in April and is available for pre-order now, REAL DOLL HAIR and all. There will only be 1000 of these made, so show your love of all things Dino and pre-order one today.

While you've got your credit card out, head over to Amazon where according to Exclaim you can pre-order the new Dinosaur Jr. live DVD,  Bug Live At 9:30 Club: In The Hands Of The Fans. The concert film captures Dinosaur Jr.'s full live performance of their classic album Bug at Washington D.C.'s famed music club this past June, and will be available on February 21.

Finally, as we mentioned earlier, Mascis is spending the weekend rocking out on The Weezer Cruise and possibly road-testing some of that new Dino Jr. material off of the album that Lou Barlow said is on the way. We're in NYC stocking up on baked beans and shotgun shells due to this two-inch "snowstorm" we're having, but our awesome and hilarious friend The Backstage Rider is on board the Cruise and sharing some pretty classic behind-the-scenes news and photos - follow her on Twitter over here

Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh have new albums on the way, both about to play Weezer Cruise

Lou Barlow w/ Dinosaur Jr. @ Terminal 5 (more here)

What a fantastic time to be a fan of Lou Barlow's various musical endeavors. A mere ten years ago, few would have expected that you'd one day be able to catch both Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh live in 2011, yet we did just that multiple times throughout last year. And though we've already witnessed the release of two fine albums by the reformed Dinosaur Jr., word comes straight from Barlow that yet another new Dinosaur album is on the way in a new interview in Miami New Times. Lou told us that work on a new album was imminent last time we spoke with him, but now he confirms that the band will in fact be hitting the studio in February.

The more exciting news is that Barlow's other project Sebadoh will begin recording an album's worth of new material following the Dinosaur sessions, making it their first album in thirteen years! Head over to our friend The Backstage Rider for more exclusive details on the project, which is slated to be released late 2012 or early 2013. I speak for Sebadoh fans everywhere... this fucking rocks. More details as they unravel will be posted here, so definitely check back for updates on the record.

Want to see Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, J Mascis and Lou Barlow all in the same weekend? Then you should probably buy a ticket for the upcoming Weezer Cruise, which takes place January 19-23 starting in Miami. Can't make it? Well then you should also head to The Backstage Rider to enter a contest and win a shit ton of Weezer merchandise, including vinyl, posters, t-shirts and temporary tattoos. Go on, get to it.

Now that we've blown your mind with tons of exciting news and stuff, watch some very wacky Weezer videos below, along with some old school Dinosaur and Sebadoh videos thrown in for good measure below...

Robert Smith meets Dinosaur Jr... in 1989

In honor of Dinosaur Jr. releasing their extremely limited edition cassette trilogy this week, and The Cure taking over the Beacon Theatre next week for three very special shows, I present you with a great Melody Maker article from 1989 that I randomly found last night at 2am. Basically, Robert Smith hated Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of "Just Like Heaven," but agreed to randomly meet the band at the urging of some "English guy," just prior to Dinosaur recording their Peel session for the BBC. Read the full article below (click on the images to fully enlarge) and then also be sure to listen to Dinosaur Jr.'s cover of The Cure below in a pretty incredible music video. Special thanks to Archived Music Press for the hi-res scans...

Dinosaur Jr. Putting Out Limited 3-Album "Cassette Trilogy"

Dinosaur Jr. @ Terminal 5 - full review & more photos here!

Let's be very clear here: selling cassette tapes in 2011 is totally weird. I say that even as I link to our Etsy store, where we do in fact sell cassette tapes in 2011. That being said, though, cassette tapes from our favorite bands in this day and age are still weirdly awesome, and Dinosaur Jr. is apparently fully aware of that fact.

That's why they've just announced that they're releasing a new 3-album collection called the Cassette Trilogy, containing each album from the classic Dinosaur Jr. canon - Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me, and Bug - on, you guessed it, cassette tapes, via Joyful Noise Recordings. The tapes will come packaged in a custom-built, screen-printed wooden box, and the set will be limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.

The collection will come out on December 13 and only cost $39, which will leave you with enough scratch to pick up a gently-used Walkman from eBay to play the tapes on. Have at it!

UPDATE: We've just learned that, in honor of the original You're Living All Over Me being packaged with the first Sebadoh cassette (Weed Forestin'), one in 10 of these new boxes will also come with a copy of Weed Forestin'! Very cool! And in a very psychic move (unless they saw our Walkman joke earlier... hi!), Joyful Noise is selling Coby cassette players for $20 along with the box sets. Thanks to The Backstage Rider for the tip!

Stream: J. Mascis -- "I've Been Thinking"

Check out more photos and a review of Dinosaur Jr.'s Terminal 5 set from over the summer!

We were all about Sebadoh's excellent Maxwell's and Music Hall of Williamsburg shows this weekend, and today we've got something cool to share from Lou Barlow's Dinosaur Jr. bandmate, J. Mascis. Sub Pop has announced that the alt-rock wizard will be releasing a 7" single next Tuesday (November 22) that will feature a cover of Edie Brickell's "Circle" on the A-Side, and - as a special B-side treat - a bonus track from Mascis' Several Shades of Why sessions called "I've Been Thinking," that was previously only available on the Japanese version of the album.

Give it a stream below and be sure to order the 7" over here.

Weezer, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, Gene Ween & more will play the Weezer Cruise

In what appears to be some sort of weird surreal dream I might've had as a fifteen-year old high on NyQuil, Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, and Gene Ween will share the bill with many, many more, for the Weezer Cruise, which will take place from January 19-23 of 2012. The four day festival, which will also feature younger (and amazing) acts such as the Antlers, Yuck, Wavves, the Nervous Wreckords (featuring Brian Karscig of Louis XIV) and Boom Bip, will sail from Miami, FL to Cozumel, Mexico in one epic, unadulterated, wacky sea adventure in the name of indie rock. The website specifically states that bands will play multiple performances.

In addition to J Mascis and Lou Barlow performing in their respective bands, the two will perform solo sets throughout the cruise, meaning Lou Barlow will be pulling triple duty (Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr, and solo). I hope the guy packs his Dramamine. You can get the exact details of the pricing scheme over at the Weezer Cruise website, but the most basics I can find are that tickets will be sold individually at $799/person or at $599/person if you travel as a group of four. Pricey for sure, but not when you consider the fact that you will be on a cruise ship with some indisputable rock gods. If I get to share a beer with Lou Barlow, and high-five Gene Ween, then it's totally worth it.

Below is the confirmed lineup so far, with more to be announced as the date nears. Props to the Backstage Rider for providing us this info, and for forcing us to seriously contemplate dipping into our retirement funds* to make it down there...

Photos/Review: Dinosaur Jr. @ Terminal 5 (w/ OFF!, Fucked Up & Henry Rollins)

Dinosaur Jr. @ Terminal 5 6/23/11

Dinosaur Jr. performing Bug @ Terminal 5 - June 23rd, 2011
Photos: Chris; Review: Jennifer Harmon

Fans were mesmerized last night from the very first moment alt-rock trio Dinosaur Jr. hit the stage at Terminal 5 to perform Bug in its entirety. Luckily we were able to cover the performance in conjunction with Vancouver music blog, the Backstage Rider. Visit BSR for even more photos from last night's show.

Singer-guitarist J Mascis said he was glad to be back in New York, the place where the band has always felt the most at home. It was crystal clear the audience reciprocated the love for Mascis along with bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph.

The massive three-floor venue was packed with an eclectic crowd of young and old concertgoers, including preppy guys and plaid-clad fellows. Some couples even brought along their kids, also lovers of kick ass rock music, who sat with their legs dangling from beneath the balcony - probably one of the best views of the stage.

Just Gimme Indie Rock! documentary needs your help

When I spoke to Lou Barlow last month, I asked him what he thought the connection was between the current indie scene and the underground indie movement he was a part of in the '80s. His response: "I just think it’s like one continuous thing. You know, we were what they are, which were young people synthesizing our influences and making music."

Oddly enough, the day I posted that interview was the same day documentary filmmaker Brad Katz launched his Kickstarter campaign to raise enough funds to bring Just Gimme Indie Rock! The Story of an Underground Uprising to the big screen. The film, which hopes to "be the first to connect the dots between these divergent eras of indie, revealing the single greatest rock and roll story never told," will feature artists over the past three decades, including Sonic Youth, Husker Du, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, Elliott Smith... well, basically every artist we cover at Fucking Nostalgic will be covered in the film. So far, the project has raised close to $8,000 of its $75,000 goal, and currently has 63 days left to meet that goal. They need your help to bring this ambitious and guaranteed-to-be-amazing movie to life.

As of right now, the $75,000 goal is just "Phase 1 Financing" as a way to ramp up production, in which afterwards they hope to hit up traditional investors to complete the project. As an incentive to those who contribute, there are gifts one will receive depending on the amount they pledge. For example, a $10 pledge will get your name added to the website's list of contributors while a $10,000 contribution will give you producer-like access to shoots, interviews, festivals and premiers. No matter what you contribute, your help is clearly needed and appreciated.

Head over to the official Just Gimme Indie Rock! blog and read more about what the project is all about, and then check out the offiical Kickstarter campaign page to see exactly what you can contribute. Personally, I think the documentary is a story that needs to be told, and I'm really hoping they raise enough funds to make it happen. Fucking Nostalgic will be covering this project along the way, and we even hope to be a part of it on a grander scale.

Below, check out some footage that has already been shot for the documentary, including interviews with Lou Barlow, Stephin Merritt and the Submarines.

This Week's Nostalgia (6/20-6/26)

The summer concert season is in full effect, and last week was no exception. If you haven't checked out our review of the Guided By Voices show that happened in Brooklyn on Saturday, do so now. This post comes a couple days later than expected for a couple of reasons. Number one - I was in Toronto for the NXNE festival with my band the Barrens. It was awesome until one of band members had his passport stolen and we had to leave him behind in Canada. I wish I was joking. Update: he's on his way home. Number two - though this is a crazy week for shows, nothing really gets going until this Wednesday, so you're not missing much until then. So let's get to it...

Sleep @ Terminal 5 - Wednesday, June 22nd

I've never been a huge fan of metal, but if there were to be one band I could seriously get behind, it would be doom metal group Sleep. I had only heard of them about a year ago when my friends at BrooklynVegan began heavily covering their reunion shows, and when I had the chance to listen to their album Dopesmoker, I was pretty blown away. I can only imagine what their sludgy, dark sound is like in a live setting, but I have a feeling it's something like experiencing your intestines turning to goo. White Hills, who I saw play some Mudhoney songs last month, are opening along with Winter. Tickets for the show are still available.

Beady Eye @ Webster Hall - Thursday, June 23rd

Little known fact: the original name of UK act Beady Eye was, "Hey Noel... Fuck You!" ...That's not true, but it would be so very excellent if it was. Formed from the ashes of Oasis upon Noel Gallagher's departure, Beady Eye released Different Gear, Still Speeding back in March and have been gaining a lot of attention in their UK home. Finally, the band will make their New York City debut this Thursday at Webster Hall after playing shows in Chicago and Toronto. Tickets were so very sold out yesterday, but as of this writing I was able to pull up a single ticket, so keep checking and don't succumb to craigslist scalpers just yet.

Bob Mould @ 92YTribeca - Thursday, June 23rd

As we mentioned, Bob Mould released his autobiography See A Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody on June 15th, and the former Sugar and Husker Du frontman is now on tour taking part in readings and solo acoustic performances around the country. The book, which deals with Mould's struggles with his own sexuality, drugs & alcohol and the world of pro wrestling, was co-written by Our Band Could Be Your Life author Michael Azerrad. I caught Bob Mould solo back in November at the Rock Shop and I can assure you he's worth checking out, especially since tickets are still on sale. Mould will also be DJ'ing the Highline Ballroom on Friday.

Dinosaur Jr. (performing Bug) @ Terminal 5 - Thursday, June 23rd

So there are three great shows happening this Thursday, but I assure you that this is the show to be at. I've been excited for this one since we announced it back in April, and now the wait is finally over. The legendary Dinosaur Jr. will be performing their classic album Bug, that's not all that's special about this concert. Former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins (who is the subject of a really interesting blog we wrote about last week) will be interviewing Dinosaur live onstage, which is guaranteed to be an awkward, hilarious, and thoroughly enjoyable watch. Punk bands OFF! and Fucked Up open the show. We will be covering the concert in conjunction with the Backstage Rider (thanks very much to Mikala), so be sure to check back later this week on both websites for photos and more. Tickets are still available!

Archers of Loaf @ Music Hall of Williamsburg - Saturday, June 25th/Webster Hall - Sunday, June 26th

As previously mentioned, Merge Records will begin reissuing all four of Archers of Loaf albums over the next few years, starting with Icky Mettle on August 2nd. The recently reunited Chapel Hill band will be touring throughout the summer in support of the reissue. New York City is lucky enough to get two opportunities to check out Archers of Loaf, starting with the Brooklyn date at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday, and the Webster Hall performance on Sunday. Thought tickets for the MHOW show are sold out, there are still some available for Webster (it's a much bigger venue). Also keep in mind, MHOW generally sells a limited amount of tickets at the door, so if you get there early enough, there's a good chance you can still make it in.

In case you haven't noticed, the summer is getting ridiculously packed with great shows, so expect this column to get even more in depth in the coming weeks. All of the shows mentioned here, plus tons more, can be found on our calendar at Upcoming Nostalgia. If there are any shows you feel we missed, please let us know in the comments section below. Enjoy!
