Sentridoh's "Weed Forestin'" Reissue Available Starting Tomorrow, Stream It Now

About a month back, we very excitedly reported the news that Real FN Hero Lou Barlow (pictured with a sweet cat t-shirt) had confirmed that both of his major beloved bands, Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr., would have new albums out by the end of this year or the beginning of 2013. A month, a badass cruise, and several awesome tweets later, the Dino Jr. album is well underway, but as we look forward to more indie rock goodness out of Team Barlow we can look back on a critical piece of the bands' history that will be available in a new form tomorrow.

Sebadoh / Dino Jr. true believers are familiar with the long and weird history of Weed Forestin', the 1987 cassette-based album released under the Sentridoh moniker when Barlow was the kid pictured above. Weed's getting quite the kickass reissue treatment: starting tomorrow (Valentine's Day aww), you can grab a digital version of the album on Bandcamp for a mere $6 or buy it on limited-edition vinyl for $15, to be shipped by March 27. There will also be a deluxe LP edition available for preorder featuring Weed Forestin' in its entirety along with a cassette of Child of the Apocalypse - a newly-released collection of unreleased songs, early demos, and tape collages from the same era - AND a USB drive with uncompressed audio from both releases and a stop motion short film based on several of Weed's songs by London artist Darryl Walker that were last (not) seen on an unplayable VHS tape sent to Barlow over a decade ago.

Yeah it's a pretty huge project, and there are more formats available in which to pick it up listed on Bandcamp. You can also go ahead and stream all 23 tracks of Weed Forestin' below right now, as well as check out Walker's video for the classic "Brand New Love."

Who loves ya, babies? We do. (Cheers to The Backstage Rider for the tip!)

The Jesus and Mary Chain Announce US Tour Dates

As we all know from listening to Jack Black in the movie, High Fidelity, The Jesus and Mary Chain picked up where your precious Echo & The Bunnymen left off, and you're sitting around complaining about no more Echo albums. Jesus!

Whether or not this is true is irrelevant, because TJ&MC have just announced several upcoming US tour dates – their first in five years. The Reid brothers, as well as guitarist John Moore and bassist Phil King, will perform, all joined by a “yet to be announced” drummer. Mysterious!

Following their recent reissue-ing of seemingly everything, we’ve been on the lookout for any local show updates. In the meantime, go buy some plane tickets for next month’s dates! Quickly, now! Do it!

Check out the schedule and watch some fun (and obligatory) videos after the jump.

Archers Of Loaf Playing NYC In April, Reissuing 2nd Album Next Month

Archers of Loaf @ Webster Hall, 6/26/2011
Reunited '90s indie rock champs Archers of Loaf are still going around rocking the faces off of everyone who presents their faces to them, and we're happy to share that they'll be back here in NYC for two-night residency nearly a year after we caught them at Webster Hall. According to BV, the band will play Bowery Ballroom on April 26 and Music Hall of Williamsburg at another date TBA that week. Our money's on the next night (uh, Friday), but we'll see.

Tickets are on sale for the Bowery show this Friday (2/3) at noon ET. You'll have more than enough time to brush up on material from their sophomore album, Vee Vee, as the deluxe reissue of that LP will be available beginning on February 21 via Merge, with reissues of the band's remaining catalog to come later this year. Feel free to give their reissued debut album, Icky Mettle, a spin right now on Spotify as you wait to pick up tickets.

FEAR To Release Christmas 7", Re-Recording Of "The Record" In 2012

Great news for oldschool punk fans - American punk pioneers FEAR are back with two new projects coming out at the end of this year and in early 2012.

The first is the digital and vinyl-only Black Friday exclusive Have Your Self A Merry Little Christmas 7", with the title track as the A-Side paired up with the classic "Another Christmas Beer" as the B-Side. The band will follow up this holiday cheer in the new year with the release of a re-recording of their blistering 1982 debut The Record that will be called, appropriately enough, The ReRecord. FEAR will tour extensively in support of the (re)record early next year as well, along with an appearance at the 2012 South By Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, TX.

We'll keep you posted as we hear more about the tour dates for sure, but be sure to pick up the 7" next Friday (11/25) after your Thanksgiving festivities are over.

The Jesus And Mary Chain Reissue Trailers Part 2: Automatic + Honey's Dead

Via The Planet of Sound
We're pretty big on doing series of posts at FN (example: we're almost up to Part 7 on our Radiohead TKOL RMX posts), so we're happy to present Part 2 of what will presumably be three posts about the album reissue trailers from The Jesus and Mary Chain. We brought you the trailers for Psychocandy and Darklands last week, and now you can check out overviews of the band's third and fourth reissues, Automatic and Honey's Dead respectively. There'll be Jim Reid DJ mixes coming up along with the final two trailers soon too, we're sure.

The Jesus And Mary Chain Unveil Trailers For Psychocandy and Darklands Reissues

Image via Verbicide
Looks like it's Trailer Thursday here at Fucking Nostalgic. Hot on the heels of the news that The Jesus and Mary Chain will be reissuing their entire catalog beginning on September 19, the band announced this morning that they've revamped their website and included a couple of cool extras - namely, the trailers for the first two reissues of Psychocandy and Darklands.

Go take a quick tour of the new site at http://thejesusandmarychain.co.uk/, and check out the trailers below. The band has stated that trailers for their remaining four reissues will come out within the next few weeks, along with exclusive DJ mixes by Jim Reid and more. Awesome.

Watch: Nirvana's "Nevermind" 20th Anniversary Edition Trailer

It's already September? Holy crap. That means that that Nirvana Nevermind 20th Anniversary reissue that we've been talking about since what feels like 1991 (or June) is coming out later this month!

And pretty much right on cue, Universal Music released a trailer for said reissue - check it out above. It pretty much blasts you in the face with all of the cool features of the separate packages that'll be available on September 27, along with live footage from Nirvana's Live at the Paramount concert film. Well worth a minute and eighteen seconds of your time to view, enjoy.

The Jesus and Mary Chain Reissuing Entire Catalog; Preview Them All In 3D

Nice, Monday's not even over as of yet and we've already got a Reissues post under our belts (our 301st FN post total to date - go us!). According to Pitchfork, very nostalgic Scottish rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain - via Demon Music Group - will be reissuing not one, not two, but all SIX of their studio albums as 2-CD + DVD deluxe sets full of all the B-sides, radio appearances, demos and in-depth booklets that generally come in these packages. Thankfully, they skipped adding sunglasses.

What's also interesting about this reissue is that fans can check out their Facebook page to preview the albums in 3D - meaning that you can listen to your favorite tracks while spinning the packages around and checking out artwork and liner notes. While 3D has long since been totally beaten to death in films, here it's a pretty cool way to check out the extras before you place your preorders.

The Jesus and Mary Chain's first two albums, 1985's Psychocandy and 1987's Darklands, will be available on September 19, with their other four albums coming out in pairs in the following two weeks. Check out the 3D previews in the meantime, as well as the video for "Just Like Honey" below the jump because I pretty much have to add it here.

Technically Nostalgic: Smashing Pumpkins Reissuing Pre-Breakup Albums, A.K.A. The Last Ones Anyone Bought

I really didn't have to look too hard to find a totally douchey photo of Billy Corgan.
Bet you thought we were going to get through this week without a Reissues post, eh? Nope! As long as there are great bands like Dinosaur Jr., Superchunk, and The Olivia Tremor Control making their classic albums available on sweet vinyl, we're going to cover it. And every so often, we'll cover bands that USED to be great but are reissuing classics to a.) cash in, b.) beat a dead horse, c.) remind people that they didn't always suck, or d.) all of the above. 'Sup Bono.

Guess which of these camps The Smashing Pumpkins fall into?

Yep, our good friends at BV reminded us that the Pumpkins (can we just take the "s" off that once and for all?) will be ramping up their reissue machine beginning November 15 by digging up the zombified corpses of the legitimately awesome Gish and Siamese Dream for purchase. 2012 will seem them trot out Pisces Iscariot, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (I may be the only person who'll still cop to liking that one),    The Aeroplane Flies High, and Adore, with the Machina LPs and a "Greatest Hits" album due out in 2013. I thought they already put out a Greatest Hits album, but maybe everyone else forgot?

As unfortunate as it is that a band that I once really liked is now basically a smoldering pile of crap, what REALLY bugs me about these reissues is that frontman Billy Corgan is very notoriously anti-nostalgia, and this move confirms that he's a tiny bald hypocrite. Check this paragraph from the WSJ:

"'Nostalgia is a death move,' said the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan in the Journal last week. He asked, 'When Sonic Youth and Pavement are out there playing those old records, isn't that throwing up the white flag?' Yes it is, though one might suggest Sonic Youth did, and can still do, great new work, while Pavement hasn't done anything for about 20 years despite last year's reunion tour."

What's especially funny and ironic here is that the FN team had an amazing time seeing Pavement at Summerstage last year and is gearing up to have a fucking awesome night seeing Sonic Youth at the Williamsburg Waterfront tonight, but there's no way in hell we'd go see whatever The Smashing Pumpkins have become.

So to summarize: fuck you, Billy Corgan. I guess you have a new album coming out too, but who cares. I wish I could separate you from the music you made, because "Cherub Rock" really was a great song - check it after the jump.

Technically Nostalgic: U2's "Achtung Baby" Turns 20, Gets (Gasp!) A Reissue Box Set

You guys used to be so awesome. What the hell.
Alright, it's time for a public admission: I used to be a huge U2 fan. HUGE. Like pretty much everyone alive during that decade, I spent much of the '80s rocking out to War, The Joshua Tree, and all of the other albums in their catalog at the time. During that decade, U2 could do no wrong and I assumed I'd found my favorite band forever at the ripe old age of 8.

Then a weird, seemingly inexplicable thing happened - in the years following 1991's Achtung Baby (which features my favorite U2 song - and likely one of my top 20 of any band - "One"), U2 began to suck. And suck HARD, completely erasing the goodwill of their breakout decade. I may be one of the few who think so, seeing as their recent U2 360 tour has been the highest grossing ever... but yeesh, give me Joshua Tree-era U2 any day over the Whatever Their Most Recent Album Was-era U2 of today.

Which is why I'm of two minds of the news (via Pitchfork) that Achtung Baby is getting a huge box set reissue in honor of its 20th anniversary this year - great album, no doubt, but does U2 really need any more money coming at them from this? As this is our 500th reissue post this week, it's about time to make fun of one of them anyway. The Achtung Baby reissue comes in five different versions, ranging from the "I Can't Find My Old Copy" edition with just the album itself to an Uber Deluxe Edition with the album, unreleased recordings, B-sides, remixes, demo versions of stuff, and for some reason a copy of the way-less-cool followup album Zooropa. That edition also comes with vinyl 7" singles, DVDs, a hardcover book, stickers, badges, and... I am completely not making this up... a pair of Bono's "Fly" sunglasses from that era.

Seriously. They're putting sunglasses in this thing.

This is all out on October 31 via Universal, so keep an eye out for that if you want. I understand that Achtung Baby represents the last vestige of "cool" U2... but really, all of my current feelings about the band can be summed up by the South Park clip below the jump. And I'll throw in the video for "One" as a reminder that U2 used to be really genuinely awesome. Sigh.

Reissued, Yo: Olivia Tremor Control’s Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage

Here’s why reissues are actually really great. For the past couple years I’ve been looking for The Olivia Tremor Control’s excellent album Music From the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle on vinyl and I’ve only come across really expensive copies on eBay. It’s an album that begs to be heard on some kind of analog format, considering it was initially recorded entirely on 4-track. Well now it looks like we’ll have the chance to experience Dusk as well as their great second album Black Foliage: Animation Music Vol 1. on glorious vinyl on November 15, and we won’t have to take out a mortgage to do so.

According to Pitchfork, both Dusk and Black Foliage will be reissued as deluxe double LP’s by Chunklet Industries, with their original artwork retouched, as well as a download card containing hours of bonus material. Considering how prolific members of the Elephant 6 Collective can be, it’s no surprise that OTC have a vault of unheard material lying around. And if you haven’t heard these albums yet, slap on some headphones and listen to both Dusk and Black Foliage over at Spotify.

In other OTC news, the band is hitting the road at the end of the month which will bring them to Le Poisson Rouge on September 21. Fellow E6 Collective act The Music Tapes are opening for them and tickets are still available for $18. Below, check out OTC’s full tour schedule for the rest of the year…

We’re not the only ones who have noticed the trend in reissues lately…

In case you haven’t noticed, we report on reissues at least twice a week around here, and I’ve personally taken note of the fact that this year in particular seems to be heavy on the re-releases (particularly in the vinyl format). Funny enough, Rolling Stone just posted a somewhat interesting article on why so many labels are digging through their back catalogue and repackaging our favorite records. You can read the full article over here, but these are the highlights:

“Reissues sell well. Most music buyers prefer the physical CD or LP package to the digital option, and sales of Pearl Jam's Vs./Vitalogy anniversary box set prove as much. Of the 20,000 copies moved since March, just 12 percent were downloaded from sites like iTunes and Amazon.

“Perhaps history's most successful reissue campaign was for last year's Rolling Stones deluxe Exile on Main Street box set, says Michael Kurtz, co-founder and manager of Record Store Day.

"Convenience doesn't trump art," Kurtz argues. "When you are dealing with a piece of art and it's a tangible thing in your hand, you're pulled into that. You're moved by it, you interact with it. When it's on your screen of your computer, it's mixed with everything else, like your work."

Regarding the recent repackaging of Nine Inch NailsPretty Hate Machine:

“NIN fans, don't waste your money on this version of PHM that was just released,” Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor tweeted about the recent rerelease of the band's 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine, adding that it's, “a record label bullsh-t move repackaging the old version. Ignore please.”’

“As for Nine Inch Nails’ loyalists, they appear to be listening to their leader. Nielsen SoundScan reports that, while 68,000 copies of the Reznor-approved PHM package have sold, only 1,000 people have purchased the version he condemned. Seems they prefer a little necessary evil with their nostalgia -- 54 percent of them ponied up for the vinyl.”

Long live vinyl.

Merge Reissuing Superchunk's "Foolish" In September

It's only Wednesday and it's already been a great week for reissues! Hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement that Jagjaguwar will be reissuing the first three Dinosaur Jr. albums in October, the good people of Merge Records have announced that THEY'LL be reissuing Superchunk's 1994 classic Foolish. This whole year has felt like one big reissues arms race, to be honest, but I'm pretty cool with that.

The reissued Foolish will feature new album art, special bonus material, and liner notes by drummer Jon Wurster - which, if they're anything like his hilarious Twitter feed, will be worth the price of admission alone. This marks the fourth Superchunk reissue in the past year, as Merge has re-released No Pocky for Kitty, On The Mouth, and Here's Where The Strings Come In separately and as a specially priced bundle.

Check out the new video for "Learned To Surf" off of their latest release Majesty Shredding below, and read our review of their recent (ridiculously awesome) show with OFF!

Dinosaur Jr.’s first three albums being reissued on vinyl (yeah!)

Soon after I spoke to Lou Barlow on the phone back in May, he tweeted that he couldn’t find his vinyl copy of Dinosaur Jr.’s third album Bug, the album Dino was playing in its entirety for their most recent tour. Subsequently, Lou had to buy his own album on iTunes. But luckily he’ll be able to buy a fresh copy of Bug as well as Dinosaur’s debut Dinosaur and You’re Living All Over Me on glorious vinyl on October 4.

Though the albums were initially released on SST and Homestead, Jagjaguwar (the band’s current label) will handle the reissues of all three albums making absolutely no changes or additions to their tracklisting. I’ve personally taken note of the fact that the only Dinosaur Jr. vinyl I’ve seen in record stores are their post-reunion albums, so I’m happy knowing that I’ll be able to pick up this trifecta of awesome vinyl in the very near future.

Though you can't preorder any of the albums quite yet, we'll keep you posted as to when you can. In the meantime why don’t you check out our review and photos of when Dinosaur Jr. played New York City in June? Yep.

Nirvana's "Nevermind" Reissue: New Details AND Tracklist

Via Facebook
So remember that Nevermind 20th anniversary deluxe reissue we mentioned a little while back? The one that was shrouded in some mystery as to what it would contain? Well, now more details have come to light thanks to a news release from Universal Music Enterprises - and let's just say it's sounding very intriguing. Details below the jump, because this is going to be a very long post.

Here's a taste of said news release:

Technically Nostalgic: Spin Doctors Celebrate 20th Anniversary of "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" With Reissue, US Club Tour

Clearly stressed out from getting mobbed by thousands of fans on the way to this photo shoot.
Awhile back, FN editor-in-chief Chris mused in passing about the pretty insane number of reissues coming out this year. I'm not going to bother finding or linking to that exact reference, but I'm 90% sure I didn't make it up. And while you COULD pick any number of said reissued albums to buy, like the 25th anniversary edition of R.E.M.'s Life's Rich Pageant or even the upcoming 20th anniversary reissue of some album called Nevermind, we highly recommend you ignore all of those and save your cash for one in particular.

Which album, you say? How about a little musical gamechanger called Pocket Full of Kryptonite by seminal '90s rockers the SPIN DOCTORS?!

Yes. Pocket Full of Kryptonite, the classic album you either didn't buy the first time or did but will carry that secret to your grave, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Let that settle in for a second - it has been 20 years since you first heard songs like "Two Princes," "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong,"... and that other one. The two-CD reissue is dropping on August 30, and you can pre-order it over here to relive those two timeless tracks, whatever other songs were on that album, and then a whole other CD full of early demos and live recordings to give you all the Spin Doctors goodness your stereo can handle. You fucking weirdo.

And just shortly after you've worn those CDs out from repeated plays, you can go see Spin Doctors LIVE at a whole slew of US club dates this fall, where they'll perform Pocket Full of Kryptonite in its entirety at every single show. Check out those tour dates here - tickets for the 10/13 Bowery Ballroom show here in NYC go on sale this Friday, so be sure to keep at least five browser windows open so you can snag one.

And because I pretty much have to, check out videos for "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" below the jump - songs that, for a brief time in 1991, showed us a glimpse of a future utopia governed by catchy yet terrible, vaguely-hippie alt rock.

The Avalanches reissuing Since I Left You

avalanches

Wow… the Avalanches’ 2001 album Since I Left You celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. That means that ten years ago I was a freshman in college, partying at an off-campus kegger, pulled into a cluttered apartment bedroom with nothing more than a mattress and several hundred books and CD’s, handed a, um, cigarette, and told by some dude I’d never met before, “check this out… this is the Avalanches.” Scary how time flies…

Stereogum reports that in celebration of the monumental sample-heavy record’s birthday, Modular will be releasing a deluxe edition of Since I Left You, featuring the original album as well as a bonus disc that includes remixes originally paired with the release, as well as new remixes from acts like MF Doom and Black Dice. Not to mention, B-sides, demo tracks and rarities. Has 2011 been the year of the “reissue” or is it just me?

Also thanks to Stereogum, check out Stereolab’s 2002 remix of “Since I Left You,” a promo-only vinyl rip, as the “original master has long since disappeared from the vaults.” Awesome…

Stream R.E.M.'s "Life's Rich Pageant" 25th Anniversary Edition

Athens, GA rock stalwarts / probably immortals R.E.M. have left an indelible mark on music for the past 30 years with 15 albums under their belt, including this year's Collapse Into Now. But even though they're still going strong, we have a great opportunity to look back at their storied history with next week's 25th anniversary reissue (wow) of their third album, Life's Rich Pageant, which is now available to stream exclusively at Spin.com.

As our friends at Slicing Up Eyeballs report, the reissue comes with a remastered version of the 1986 album along with a 19-track bonus disc entitled The Athens Demos. As that name implies, that disc has early cuts of all of the tracks off of Life's Rich Pageant, plus early versions of songs that would appear on later albums - for example, "March Song (King of Birds)," which would appear in its final form as "King of Birds" on Life's followup Document the next year. R.E.M. superfans will be especially happy with the inclusion of the demo for the heavily-bootlegged track "Wait."

Check it out in full over at Spin, and enjoy the video for "Fall on Me" below!

The Raincoats reissuing Odyshape, playing Brooklyn's Warsaw

Layout 1

One of my favorite post-punk bands, The Raincoats, will reissue one of my favorite post-punk albums, Odyshape, on September 13th. Though the album was originally released by Rough Trade, the band have taken it upon themselves to remaster the record and release it on their own We ThRee label. This remastered version of Odyshape will be available on both vinyl (yay!) and CD. According to Pitchfork, the release will also include liner notes written by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

In celebration of the reissue (there seems to be a lot of reissuing going on these days), the Raincoats will embark on a short tour, beginning at Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s Warsaw on 9/16. Tickets are on sale now. The band will eventually end their tour at Montreal’s Pop Montreal festival, but will make a one-off appearance at the Jeff Mangum-curated ATP England in December.

All tour dates are listed below…

Grandaddy reissuing The Sophtware Slump

To me, Grandaddy were always one of those bands I listened to a lot but never really pursued seeing them live or reading much about them at all. I must’ve listened to Sumday at least fifty times throughout 2004, and then went back and listened to their second album The Sophtware Slump twice as much. Both albums contain incredibly strong songwriting, unique production and extremely catchy melodies. And then they abruptly, and not very amicably split in 2006. I predict their reunion tour in 2014 to be amongst the most celebrated of the year.

So I must say it’s exciting to read a report on Drowned in Sound that Universal/V2 will be reissuing The Sophtware Slump in a two disc deluxe package, containing b-sides, singles associated with the era, EP tracks and various demos. The release will be available on August 22nd, and though the report makes no mention of a vinyl release, I’m sure one is forthcoming. We’ll keep you updated leading up to the release.

Below, check out Grandaddy’s “Lost on Your Merry Way,” a song with an ending I wish would never end…
