Spring is almost sorta kinda in the air, and with that comes a new track from the appropriately named Baltimore dream pop duo Beach House. The band released "Myth" late last night, further cementing rumors that their fourth album, Bloom, would be released on May 15 on Sub Pop.

Hey, remember that time back in the summer of 2001 when we showed up to Stone Mountain 8 hours before the Radiohead show with the intention of spending the day hiking up the "mountain" [read: large mound of granite]? Yeah, we wound up spending the entire day sitting on the blacktop in the 95 degree heat waiting with the other diehard fans hoping to get a choice spot right in front of the stage at the general admission show. I don't think I peed once that entire day. From a distance, I was able to hear them play "Like Spinning Plates" during the soundcheck and I just about lost my mind in excitement (alas, they didn't play it during the show). How about that time we bailed on that super-important Circuits lecture back in college to make it to the amphitheater in time to hang out in the parking lot for 3 hours before the show? How about that last time when we realized we were adults and showed up at 7pm with the reasonable people?
Remember all that? OF COURSE YOU DON'T!!! You're not me! Get your own memories!

Just a mere moment (read: a couple weeks) ago, in a pre-February world, Damien let us know that Garbage was returning this May with their fifth studio album, Not Your Kind of People.

Hope you had a great weekend! We're now two weeks out from the release of Old Ideas, the new album from poet and legendary crooner Leonard Cohen, and yesterday The New Yorker premiered the third single from said LP entitled "Going Home." The lyrics of the song also comprise a poem that appears in the latest issue of the magazine - you can read it as well as listen to the song over here, or just stream the song after the jump.
Great stuff so far, and we're looking forward to hearing the album in full on January 31, or likely before (thanks in advance, NPR).
Sonic Youth axeman and all-around excellent guy Lee Ranaldo has a new solo LP, Between The Times And The Tides, coming out on March 20, and earlier today Matador unveiled its first single. And it's called "Off The Wall."
First of all: yeah we know. Secondly, it's awesome and is completely dissimilar from Michael Jackson's classic song. Give it a listen over here and check out a live performance of the song from Ranaldo's performance at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn last month. Pick up the album when it drops too, as it's sounding great so far.
As we previously reported, 2012 is going to be an awesome year for The Magnetic Fields and the many Stephin Merritt fans out there. Their new album, Love At The Bottom Of The Sea, is coming out on March 6, and the band will support it with a full-on tour that leads them through the Jeff Mangum-curated All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK, SXSW in Austin, and our own Beacon Theatre in April (tickets).

Holy crap, this year is going by way too quickly already. This reminder is brought to you by eternal badass Leonard Cohen, who today unveiled the second single off of his upcoming album Old Ideas which will be out in full in three weeks (January 31). Entitled "Darkness," it's a jazzier but still appropriately brooding counterpart to the album's first single, "Show Me The Place." So hey, remember how Radiohead had a pretty busy September last year? Turns out there was even more going on than we thought. As Pitchfork reports, frontman Thom Yorke had put together some new original tracks that month as well... to soundtrack models walking the catwalk at clothing line Rag & Bone's fashion show. Yep.
Check out said new tracks, "Stuck Together" and "The Twist," below. Longtime FN fans may remember that "The Twist" also showed up on Yorke's "Money Back" mix that he premiered on Mary Ann Hobbs' XFM show around the same time, but this is an updated/alternate version.
Seeing as Yorke has already revealed to Rolling Stone that both Radiohead AND Atoms For Peace have new material coming up sometime soonish, these make for additional interesting glimpses as to where Yorke might be headed. Of course we're going to keep our eyes on it.
Happy Christmas Eve, y'all! As she announced late last week, the lovely (and apparently gangsta) Cat Power is in the process of wrapping up her as-yet-untitled new album. While we wait for more news on that, she's teamed up with boxing champ Manny Pacquiao to release a video for an extended and reworked version of "King Rides By" from 1996's What Would The Community Think in which Pacquiao punches a bag in slow-motion. Yup.
Another day, another new Guided By Voices song! Hot on the heels of the cool but extremely short "So High" comes another B-Side from the "Doughnut For A Snowman" 7" entitled "One, Two, Three, Four." This one clocks in at just over a minute and is a mellow track written by Tobin Sprout, ostensibly about counting. As we reported recently, electronic-leaning Frenchmen AIR are coming back with a new album on February 6 entitled Le Voyage Dans La Lune. One of the key guests on this album is Victoria LeGrand, frontwoman of the comparably laid-back Beach House, and NME points to a stream of their collaborative track "Seven Stars."

While they unfortunately did not perform at Irving Plaza last night, Mos Def and Talib Kweli DID combine forces as the always awesome Black Star and hit up The Colbert Report. They blazed through the new (!!) track "Fix Up" on the broadcast and a standout (among many) from their self-titled album "Astronomy (8th Light) as a web exclusive. ...So hey, remember that time last week when The Flaming Lips put out a six-hour song? And we were 99% positive frontman Wayne Coyne had lost his mind? Well, let's just go ahead and bump that up to 100% because, as O Music Awards reports, they're already planning to release... a TWENTY-FOUR (that's 24) HOUR-LONG SONG. On Halloween. Encased in HUMAN SKULLS.
Yeah. Coyne and the gang are inserting a hard drive with this 24-hour song into (let me just emphasis again) FIVE HUMAN SKULLS. All of which have apparently been sold already for $5,000 to five very rich and legitimately insane people. As the song has yet to be completed, it's still a bit up in the air... but if anyone is batshit enough to make it happen, it's The Flaming Lips.
We'll keep you posted on that, but in case you're looking for something a bit more manageable, we've still got that SIX hour song streaming for you below.
So with all this entire album catalog reissuing going on, one might naturally pose the question, "What's The Jesus and Mary Chain frontman Jim Reid getting up to these days?" Turns out the answer is writing cool new tracks and posting them on JAMC's Twitter feed, as that's exactly what happened last night.
Stream his new track, "Black and Blues," below. As our friends at Slicing Up Eyeballs note, there's no indication whether or not this is our first taste of a rumored new Jesus and Mary Chain record, but it's still pretty great in its own right. Oh, and if you want to pick up the reissued versions of Psychocandy and Darklands, you can do that now too.
At long last, we finally get to discuss the Nostalgic Elephant In The Room. Yes, we knew that Lou Reed and Metallica have been working on an album called Lulu together. Yes, we know the tracklist, the release date (November 1 via Warner Bros.), and that a bunch of the songs are going to be really, really long.
Initially, we (or at least I) didn't feel like writing about it because... well, it just FELT like a completely terrible concept. And now that the "supergroup" has "leaked" a 30-second preview of a new track called "The View," we can confirm that the album will in all likelihood completely suck. Judging from the majority of the comments in that Facebook thread, a bunch of their "fans" agree.

Despite my lukewarm feelings for their involvement in TRON: Legacy, celebrated French robot duo Daft Punk still remain one of my favorite electronic acts of all time. And while I wait semi-impatiently to see them rock a live show in NYC (their appearance at Phoenix's MSG show late last year was an awesome teaser though), news of a new Daft Punk track is more than enough to grab my attention.
...Well, new to the public, anyway. The song is actually an early recording from 1994 called "Drive" that hadn't seen the light of day until Soma Records' release of their 20 Years compilation today. As part of the release, Soma is now streaming the full version of the song on their YouTube page, which you can also hear below thanks to the magic of embed codes. Thanks to Pitchfork for the tip.
Oklahoma's freak-rock sons The Flaming Lips are in the process of putting together a six hour-long song, "Found A Star On The Ground," and have offered fans the opportunity to have their names featured in one of the lyrics that Wayne Coyne will sing at some point during that massive span of time in exchange for $100. All of the money raised will go toward the OK Humane Society and the ACM@UCO music program, so you get to contribute to charity AND finally get the opportunity to be in a Flaming Lips song that you never had before because your name isn't Yoshimi.
Hey, did you catch Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night? I didn't because I'm an old man and I fell asleep before it came on, but thanks to the ever-vigilant Audio Perv we can all check out their performance of "Senator" (censored for the kids who are up that late). Apparently Tony Orlando was there too?
NBC also posted a web-only exclusive performance of the unreleased track "Surreal Teenagers," which you can check out below along with another new song, "Independence Street," that the band played at Other Music when we caught them there last week.
NPR continues to deliver the goods this morning with an exclusive interview with Will Cullen Hart of the O.G. Elephant 6 collective band Olivia Tremor Control - the group who "released some of the most sonically adventurous, fantastically beautiful music of the mid- to late '90s, then promptly went into hiding." Robin Hilton of NPR's All Songs Considered blog speaks to Hart about the reasons behind the hiatus, the upcoming Olivia Tremor Control album due out early next year, and their upcoming tour which will bring them through NYC's Le Poisson Rouge on September 21 (oh hey that's my birthday!).
