Future Nostalgia: Watch St. Vincent Cover The Pop Group On Fallon

Future Nostalgia shines a spotlight on newer bands who, in our eyes, are on the cusp of achieving legendary status. These are acts we normally wouldn't feature, but feel so strongly about we just couldn't resist.

As we've made very clear very recently, we are pretty much in love with St. Vincent here at Fucking Nostalgic. Her studio output shows no signs of losing its sense of fresh innovation (as evinced by her latest album Strange Mercy), and her live shows further display her growing artistic mastery (read: we're pissed we didn't go last week). And, like Bradford Cox, she's one of our peers age-wise, which makes her achievements that much more impressive.

But enough gushing for now. The Woman Also Known As Ms. Annie Clark appeared on Jimmy Fallon last night and, like everyone else we opt to cover who appeared before her, totally rocked it. She performed a cover of The Pop Group's "She Is Beyond Good And Evil," which you can check out after the jump thanks to The Audio Perv. As foretold by prophecy (and Twitter), reunited math-rockers Chavez were the latest awesome band to stop by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night. Matt Sweeney brought his hat and his bandmates to rock through Gone Glimmering's "Laugh Track" on the broadcast proper and Ride The Fader closer "You Must Be Stopped" as a web exclusive.

Watch them both below, because they're fucking awesome. We'll keep you posted on any other news we hear out of the Chavez camp for sure.

Wow. I may not like Jimmy Fallon himself, but I kinda want to be best friends with whoever he has booking bands on his show. Following up a week that featured performances by both Radiohead AND Portishead, math-rock legends Chavez will be stopping by Late Night With Jimmy tomorrow (October 12) according to Matador. If you're in the NYC area, you can apply to sit on that bench behind the band and see 'em live that way, or you can skip all the Fallon-y stuff and wait until Thursday morning when we inevitably post the clip. They were awesome at ATP I'll Be Your Mirror, so don't miss them!

As we've mentioned, the legendary Portishead have been doing everything in their power to rock the hell out of the NYC, from outstanding performances at this past weekend's ATP I'll Be Your Mirror Festival in NJ (more on that here) to two more shows at Hammerstein Ballroom in the city proper these past two nights. 

Last night, they hit up Late Night With Jimmy Fallon for their first U.S. television appearance since 1998 to perform their post-Third single for Amnesty International "Chase The Tear," along with Dummy leadoff track "Mysterons" as a web exclusive. So ends the Radiohead NYC Takeover. 'Til we meet again, Bass Face.

SNL, The Colbert Report, mindblowing Roseland shows... Radiohead was all up in NYC's grill last week, and this news editor could not have been happier about that. Last night, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood capped off their run of our fair city with a performance of the stunning "Give Up The Ghost" off of The King of Limbs on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Check out the video below, with the added advantage of not having to watch the rest of Jimmy Fallon.

The band is on its way back to London to celebrate the release of the TKOL RMX 1234567 album next week with a live DJ set from Thom and some friends, but we won't soon forget the time they rocked us here. Bass Face For Mayor.

Portishead Is Also Playing Jimmy Fallon Next Week (10/5)

Right. So at this point I feel I owe begrudging but admittedly deserved props to Jimmy Fallon for pulling off something neither Stephen Colbert or his old cohorts at SNL could achieve: having both Radiohead AND Portishead on his show the same week. Portishead will stop by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on October 5, just two days after Radiohead's scheduled appearance and on the second night of their two-day residency at Hammerstein Ballroom. Not a bad way to follow up a week of hanging out with Pink Floyd members, Jimmy. Cheers to Prefix Magazine for the tip.

No word on what song(s) they'll play yet, but my money's on "Machine Gun" off of their latest LP Third so check out their Jools Holland performance of that song from a couple of years ago below. Prior to the Fallon appearance and the Hammerstein shows, they'll be at this ATP Festival you may have heard of, and we'll keep you posted on how that goes as well.

Radiohead Playing Jimmy Fallon This Monday (A.K.A. Yes We Love Talking About Radiohead)

Good lord. We literally JUST spent last night getting our brains shattered by Radiohead at Roseland, and now our friends at Radiohead At Ease have reported that the band will be hanging out in NYC for a little while longer to appear on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Monday night. They'll be playing "Give Up The Ghost" from their latest album The King of Limbs, which sounds freaking amazing live - and we have video to prove it below.

Seriously, if this doesn't result in an ATP appearance over the weekend, we will eat our collective hats. Stay tuned.

DAMMIT: Mogwai Cancel Their American Shows This Week, Including NYC + ATP

Yes, you read that correctly. Scottish post-rock titans Mogwai - who had to postpone their April shows here in NYC to this week due to visa issues - took to Facebook just now to postpone THOSE rescheduled shows due to medical reasons. Those include tomorrow and Tuesday's shows at Webster Hall, their appearance at this weekend's All Tomorrow's Parties I'll Be Your Mirror festival, and shows in Philly, D.C., and Boston.

That is a major amount of suck for the Northeastern seaboard this week, but we wish them a speedy recovery and all the best. They promise to keep us posted on another round of rescheduled dates as soon as possible, and we'll let you know once we have that info.

Hey, did you catch Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night? I didn't because I'm an old man and I fell asleep before it came on, but thanks to the ever-vigilant Audio Perv we can all check out their performance of "Senator" (censored for the kids who are up that late). Apparently Tony Orlando was there too?

NBC also posted a web-only exclusive performance of the unreleased track "Surreal Teenagers," which you can check out below along with another new song, "Independence Street," that the band played at Other Music when we caught them there last week.

As we not-so-patiently wait to get our collective faces blown off at They Might Be Giants' free Williamsburg Waterfront show tomorrow with Eugene Mirman (and now also Hot Pocket enthusiast Jim Gaffigan!), the Johns were nice enough to stop by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to rock through "Can't Keep Johnny Down" off of their new album Join Us. 

Check it out below (thanks to The Audio Perv), as well as a web exclusive performance of the universally-beloved "Birdhouse In Your Soul." As much as Jimmy Fallon himself kinda annoys me, I've gotta give the guy props for knocking it out of the park when it comes to his musical guest lineup.

Archers of Loaf @ Webster Hall - June 26th, 2011

Recently reunited Chapel Hill, NC indie rock band Archers of Loaf are certainly gaining a lot of praise for their current tour, which brought them to New York City twice this past weekend. And for good reason. The band, who also played at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday, were as energetic on stage as you remembered them, blasting through their initial set in an under an hour, and returning for two encores. I've felt the floor at Webster Hall shake before, but I was truly scared it was about to collapse as soon as Archers began playing. Mr. Dream, a band comprised of two former Pitchfork writers (sorry, but that's what they're going to be known as for now), opened the show with a solid set of abrasive, yet controlled, punk tunes.

As previously mentioned, Archers of Loaf's discography will be reissued by Merge Records in the coming years, starting with their debut album Icky Mettle. You can preorder Icky Mettle over at the Merge Store and receive your copy on its street date of August 2nd, plus you will also receive a video of their “secret” reunion show this past January plus the option to download the remastered album immediately.

As you can tell by our recent posts, we're pretty big Thurston Moore fans here at Fucking Nostalgic. And as we mentioned last night on our Facebook page, Thurston stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night to perform a live version of "Circulation" off of his excellent new album Demolished Thoughts.
