As we mentioned on Friday, French avant-garde musician Yann Tiersen was in town to perform two shows in NYC – one at the 1,025 capacity Irving Plaza on Friday, and the next at the 550 capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday. The two shows were part of a larger tour for Yann, which brings him and his band to Montreal tonight before heading down the west coast and southwest for the rest of May. His excellent new album Skyline is now available to purchase on iTunes and stream on Spotify. Yann Tiersen released Skyline, playing NYC tonight and tomorrow

In October of last year, French musician Yann Tiersen released his seventh studio album Skyline in the UK and the rest of Europe. Last week on April 17, the album was finally released here in the US on ANTI- Records. What’s with the delay in releases across continents lately? A friend of mine in France just told me last night how much The Avengers sucked, and as far as I know, I can’t/won’t come to that conclusion until next Friday. What gives?

Perhaps to soften the blow of disappointment that will inevitably overcome my inner twelve-year old comic book fan next week, I should take consolation in the fact that Tiersen will be playing Irving Plaza tonight (4/27) and Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow (4/28)—both sure to be excellent shows. See how I somehow just made a correlation between comic books and live avant-garde music? Really weird. Tickets are still on sale for the Irving Plaza show tonight, but tomorrow’s show is sold out.

Yann Tiersen’s New York City dates are part of a large tour, which will bring him around the country and into Canada up until the end of May, and then back over to Europe during the summer. At 10.30am my phone rings, firmly waking me from the slumber the seagulls have been attempting to draw me out of since around 6am with their incessant squawking. It’s my friend who lives in Minehead inviting me out for breakfast in the local ‘Hairy Dog’ pub. After explaining that I’d had little or no sleep and that there was absolutely zero chance of me dragging my sorry self from my bed, I hung up the phone to find that I was unable to go back to sleep. Over an hour and a half later my wife finally woke up and after some breakfast and a bit of ‘Jeff Mangum TV’ we finally noticed that it was turning out to be a spectacularly beautiful day outside.

We headed out of the accommodation for a walk in the sun, through the rows of chalets, on toward the meringue turrets of the skyline pavilion, brilliant white against the cloudless morning sky. We decide to head inside to see if any new and exciting merch had arrived, stopping on the way to take in the awesome ATP mosaic by Shannon McLean (a rendering of the cover of the Neutral Milk Hotel record In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, seen above).
