FN News Roundup: March 26, 2012

Mission of Burma @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 1/19/12
Mission of Burma @ MHOW, 1/19/2012

Hoooooly crap a LOT of great things happened today. Let's get to it.

  • FN heroes Mission of Burma will continue rocking our faces off with their new LP Unsound, which will drop on July 9 via their new label Fire Records. Check out leadoff track "Dust Devil" below. Do it. We'll wait. Why are you still reading this (Pitchfork)

  • In what is probably the biggest tease ever for me and every other Amurrican New Order fan, frontman Bernard Sumner has confirmed in a post-Ultra Festival interview that the legendary band will be back in the US for more shows once they've fulfilled other dates worldwide. I'll just stand here with my credit card out, Bernard (Slicing Up Eyeballs)

  • NEW SIGUR ROS ALBUM (VALTARI) ON MAY 9! STREAM TITLE TRACK BELOW! IT'S COOL IF YOU TEAR UP A LITTLE (Consequence of Sound)

  • New Liars album on June 5! (Mute)

  • Tenacious D. 2012 Tour. Hammerstein Ballroom on June 28. Tickets on sale this Friday at 10am ET. Really no need for me to tell you how excited to get here. (BrooklynVegan)

  • Stream M. Ward's new album A Wastland Companion! There's a LOT less Zooey Deschanel on this, so that's already a reason to like it (NPR)

  • New(ish) Japandroids single? Yes! 2012 Tour bringing them to Bowery Ballroom on June 26 for a sweaty awesome rock show? Yes Squared. (Stereogum)

  • 22 seconds of the first new Soundgarden song are available now. Juuuuuust enough to blueball SG fans until the release of The Avengers soundtrack (or, knowing the Internet, a couple weeks from now) (Rock It Out)

News Roundup: February 21, 2012 ("A Ton Of Stuff Happened" Edition)

Yo. So as always seems to be the case after a long weekend, a TON of cool announcements dropped today. The FN staff is scrappy, sure, but still rather small (wanna join us?), so we couldn't grab up everything today.

When that happens, we turn to the informative power of... THE NEWS ROUNDUP!... to give you guys all the tips, links, and general goodness we saw out there and smiled and nodded at. Lots of really good stuff today too, so check it below:

--- Pulp added a second show at Radio City Music Hall - tickets are on sale now.

--- Speaking of legendary Brit-pop acts, Blur played The Brit Awards this evening (via CoS)! Check out some videos. They're also headlining the London 2012 Olympic Closing ceremonies, along with The Specials and, oh, NEW ORDER.

--- Rufus Wainwright is coming back to Amurrica in May, including a local show at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on May 9. Presale tickets are on sale now, as are just general tickets to shows taking place shortly after in California.

--- tUnE-yArDs! Her crazy awesomeness is going on a big Summer 2012 Tour, including a stop at Terminal 5 on June 1. No one really likes T5, but she has a way of making everything excellent, so buy a ticket to that or other shows on the East Coast and briefly in Canada.

--- Matador unveiled the third single from Ceremony's upcoming album, Zoo, called "Adult." This album is clearly going to rule.

--- Public Image Ltd. revealed more details about that upcoming album we told you about (via P4K).

Did we forget anything rad that happened today? Maybe. How about you tell us more in the comments?

New Order Releasing Double Live Album In Early January (Download Available Now)

Looking for a last-minute gift for that hardcore New Order fan in your life that'll fit on a thumb drive and is proof positive that even more big things are in the works for the Hooky-less version of the band? Well you're in luck, you terrible procrastinator! New Order has released Live At The London Troxy 10th December '11, a limited edition double album of their 90-minute set from earlier this month.

You can get the digital version of said album right now or pre-order the CD version for delivery on the first week of January and get the download included for free. You can also listen to samples of the career-spanning set before you buy, too. It's a definite indication of great things to come from the new New Order in 2012, and we're sure Peter Hook will headbutt a wall for each purchase this album receives. Check out the tracklist after the jump, and have at it. (Thanks to Slicing Up Eyeballs for the tip!)

New Order Playing Miami's Ultra Music Festival In March 2012

YES YES YES! Our fervent prediction that legendary British rockers New Order would be taking their (mostly) reunited lineup around the world in 2012 is coming to pass. Aside from dates in the UK, South America, and New Zealand, us Yanks can now get officially psyched: the Miami News Herald reports that organizers of the city's upcoming Ultra Music Festival have confirmed that New Order will be performing there this coming March!

This will be the band's first performance in the US in seven years, and is a damn big clue that there will be more US dates to come. We'll keep you posted for sure; check out a classic performance of New Order performing "Age of Consent" below as you imagine former bassist Peter Hook angrily headbutting a wall. (Cheers to Slicing Up Eyeballs for the tip!)

New Order Playing London And South America In December

Be still our little nostalgic hearts. Fresh off of playing two shows in Brussels and Paris respectively to raise funds for their ailing friend Michael Shamberg, earlier this week FN mascots New Order announced their first London show in 5 years at the Troxy on December 10. It is now sold out. Bummer.

However, good news for South American fans - the band has JUST announced three more December dates in Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo, and Santiago on December 1, 3, and 5 respectively. You can grab more info about those dates at the band's new website.

So let's get all Angela Landsbury on this. New website. New press photo. New select tour dates. If this ISN'T leading up to a 2012 world tour, we will be extremely surprised. We'll keep you posted on, and likely type excitedly in ALL CAPS about, any NYC dates that materialize. One thing is for sure: Peter Hook is gonna be pissed.

Meanwhile, check out some goodness from their Brussels show after the jump.

New Order @ Ancienne Belgique, Brussels (10/17): Setlist And A Ton Of Videos

Image via Lopez Lucero. Just act like Hooky isn't there.
As we've likely made clear by now, we're not based in Belgium. So what band would prompt us to devote a post to a show that they performed thousands of miles away from our home base in NYC with no corresponding tour to our city yet confirmed? That, my friends, would be British rock legends and one of my favorite bands of all time, New Order.

As faux-hawked former bassist Peter Hook angrily weighed in on, 75% of the band's original lineup - including keyboard player Gillian Gilbert! - reunited this week to play two charity shows to help raise medical expenses for ailing friend Michael Shamberg, the first of which took place last night in Brussels. There are rumors floating around that these shows could lead to an American tour, which I am at least 15,000% in favor of.

And you will be too, once you check out the setlist and select HD videos from their show last night. In addition to playing "1963" live for the first time EVER, the band tore through classics like "Ceremony," "Age of Consent," "Blue Monday," and "Bizarre Love Triangle," my personal favorites "The Perfect Kiss" and "Regret," AND a rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" that likely had Hooky arm-wrenchingly mad.

Check out the setlist below via our good friends at Slicing Up Eyeballs and HD video via some awesome Belgian people who were in attendance. Thanks Europe!

New Order are currently planning a US tour, Peter Hook has a vein in his head that’s about to explode

The story of New Order is one filled with sadness, grief, loss and success. But most importantly, it’s just fucking hilarious. The band recently announced they would be playing two charity shows later this year, angering bassist Peter Hook because they didn’t consult or ask him about it--presumably because he was too busy playing Joy Division songs without any members of Joy Division (irony, sweet irony). Though this is far from the first time New Order have split up only to reform shortly thereafter, the outlook of a full on reunion in the near future is grim. And if the recent bickering between Peter Hook and frontman Bernard Sumner is any indication, it’s safe to say that Hooky will never share the stage with his old band ever again.

While I’m excited at the idea of seeing New Order live in the US, I’m much more anxious to see how Peter Hook intends to fuck over the band in any possible way he can. That’s right, he actually said that. Read the full statement over at NME. He also called them dickheads and that if “they think they’re going to scuffle off to a cabin in the woods, they’ve got another thing coming.” Now just picture that for a second. Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert are hanging out in a cabin preparing dinner and discussing how great they are, when suddenly a shirtless and furious Peter Hook kicks in the door and pulls Gillian’s arms out of her sockets. Amazing.

The important thing here is that Hooky says the idea of New Order reforming simply for charity is “bullocks” and that they are currently trying to book a US tour. And thus, the vein in Peter Hook’s head is one step closer to full on rupture. We’ll be keeping a close watch on that vein, as well as any announcement of New Order tour dates.

Peter Hook & The Light show moved to Gramercy Theatre, New Order reforms without Peter Hook

Peter Hook, former bassist of the extremely influential Joy Division and New Order, is about to begin a tour with his new band The Light covering Joy Division’s Closer, and even Unknown Pleasures on select dates. The tour is controversial to say the least, and in a great recent interview with our friends Slicing Up Eyeballs, Hook even admits to reading some of the vile comments written about him on BrooklynVegan. None of the controversy has persuaded him to stop the tour however, and Peter Hook & The Light will be here in New York City on September 13 at Gramercy Theatre, moved from the previously announced Irving Plaza. Tickets are still available.

In related news, aside from the previously mentioned new tracks they’re about to release, New Order has announced a reunion of sorts to raise money for friend and filmmaker Michael Shamberg who has been suffering from a serious illness. The catch is… Peter Hook will not be a part of it. The good news is that original keyboardist Gillian Gilbert will be a part of it after a ten year absence, along with Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris. The concerts will take place in Brussels on October 17 and Paris on October 18. Good luck making it into those.

Peter Hook’s tour dates (see below) do leave the door open for him to make up with his former bandmates in time for the October benefit shows, but I’m thinking that’s unlikely to happen…

New Order Releasing Seven Additional Songs From Waiting For The Sirens Call Sessions

FN favorites New Order had a long and storied career that has unfortunately been paired with a long and acrimonious post-breakup feud. However, according to our friends over at Slicing Up Eyeballs, former bassist Peter Hook has revealed that the New Wave pioneers have agreed to release seven outtakes from the recording sessions for their last studio album, 2005's Waiting For The Sirens' Call, in order to help finalize the split.

Part of the reason behind the decision to release these tracks now, Hooky says, was the inclusion of one of the outtakes, "Hellbent," on the recent Joy Division / New Order compilation Total. While it still remains to be seen exactly how the former bandmates will release the material, Hook is "delighted" with the decision to finally put these long-rumored tracks out in public.

Check out Slicing Up Eyeballs for more of Peter Hook's thoughts on the matter, and be sure to check back again for their full interview with him next week in advance of his upcoming U.S. tour with The Light. And in case you haven't picked up Total yet, you can stream the aforementioned "Hellbent" after the jump along with  Sirens' Call single "Krafty."

Mixtape: Spring 2004

By Debbie Chou

I made a mix during my senior year at University of Hartford. This was before podcasts were around and iPods were still chunky. It was just my discman and me, roaming the campus everyday, with the CD of this mix on repeat and sometimes on shuffle. This was during my final semester so I had a lot on my mind—completing works for my composition recital, competing in the regional semi-finals with my a cappella group, asking myself if there is a future with this guy I was seeing, wondering what the fuck I was going to do after I graduate. Those were bittersweet times but it was my best semester.

I graduated, then I had to pack everything and take down the photos from my wall one last time. I had that room all to myself for the entire school year. Boy, if those walls could talk… Anyway, my family helped me pack. They knew I could be slow and inefficient sometimes so they were being a little pushy. The truth was I was dragging my feet because I was too sad. Our family friend drove up from Queens in his van and took my parents and myself to his house where my boxes and suitcases would be stored for the entire summer. I would then spend the next two months in Taipei before I returned to New York for my summer job. After that, Lori and I would go apartment hunting while we submitted our resumes to whoever was hiring. That was all I knew: the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Ah, the unknown.

As we drove away from my dorm, I put my headphones on and listened to my mix once again. The opening track that gave me confidence and energy every morning now made me feel anxious and…well…FUCKING NOSTALGIC. Wow, four years go by so fast. I had great times there. Senior year rocked. Where am I going to live in New York City? What jobs can I get? What funds do I have? When am I going to see my boyfriend again? What can I do with my music? And so on. If only I could go back in time and tell myself that everything will be OK, but I think deep down I knew that already.

This is the exact order of the mix with fewer gaps. None of these songs were popular hits in 2004, so this is nostalgia within nostalgia. Yes, there are two U2 tracks. Yes, there are three songs by The Cure. Welcome to my life in West Hartford, Connecticut. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed my spring of 2004.
