Review: Gossip @ Terminal 5

Gossip @ Terminal 5 - May 22, 2012

Since the beginning of time, humans and even dinosaurs have agreed that the best parties are the ones without rules. No dress codes. No boundaries. No curfews. Following this triumvirate of indisputable knowledge, on Tuesday night we found ourselves at one of my new favorite dance scenes: Gossip at Terminal 5.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We made it in time for second opener SSION’s set, and I honestly could not have asked for a better pre-Gossip band.
Cody Critcheloe's art-pop-circus-disco extravaganza was all glitter and drag and funk. It was like Studio 54 wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a riddle wrapped in sequins. Complete with backup dancers in hot pants and some seriously fierce outfit combos, there was no better way to get this party started. RIGHT?!

Packed with half-naked bodies ready to sweat it out, the venue exploded as the house lights dimmed and Gossip pounced the stage. Commanding everyone’s attention with her fucking gorgeous twang, everything about Beth Ditto was pure perfection – from her hair to her dress to her sassy in-between-songs-banter. So clear and tough and glorious, Ditto's voice impales your eardrums with sounds you didn't even know were possible. Blissfully crooning without missing a beat, the crowd sang along to every word, entranced by the momentum of each new verse. I’m pretty sure dudes were crying.

Thrown as a record release party for their latest album, A Joyful Noise, they covered all of their new tracks throughout the night, including the very catchy recent single, “Perfect World”. Mixing all the best of soul, punk, pop and dance, this celebration was unstoppable, and we danced into the darkness, under the lights of a disco ball.

The whole shebang was available for live streaming from The Bowery Presents and you can still catch a few clips on their YouTube channel. Unfortunately / Awesomely, we were too busy boppin' to grab a decent photo, but I think the videos say it all. Enjoy!
