The Live Iggy And The Stooges DVD Is On Its Way, Download A Live Track Now

Fresh off reporting the news that rock legends Iggy And The Stooges have been working on new material (and then, uh, giving that Iggy Pop action figure back to the same person who donated it), we're happy to share that the band has announced that Raw Power Live: In The Hands of the Fans will be available on September 27 in vinyl, DVD, and Blu-Ray formats. This compilation is the result of an online contest in which six fans were selected to film Iggy And The Stooges' September 3, 2010 performance of Raw Power in its entirety at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival and then meet and interview the band backstage.

You can preorder it over on their Facebook page, where you can also download a live version of "Search and Destroy" from the performance along with 5 Iggy photos in exchange for your email address. Dooooo it.

The Stooges have new material, Fucking Nostalgic has an Iggy action figure to giveaway!

If you weren't completely aware, we are absolutely massive fans of The Stooges. Having seen them live at Lollapalooza in 2007, and nearly suffocating in the process, I can say without a doubt they are one of the greatest live bands of all time. Their last record, The Weirdness, was unfortunately not too great--but that doesn't mean word of brand-new Stooges material doesn't excite the bejesus out of us.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Iggy Pop had the following to say of his work on new Stooges material with Raw Power-era guitarist James Williamson (who rejoined the lineup after the death of original guitarist Ron Asheton):

Yeah, we started trading stuff by MP3 back and forth as soon as we started. We actually did get together this spring. He came to my house in Miami and we wrote 10 things. I think we like about half of them. One of the songs, "Requiem For A Heavyweight," is a really nice piece of music that James wrote on the dobro. We played it at a tribute concert to Ron Asheton in Michigan earlier this year. I was so nervous that I sang the first half of it an octave too high by accident. I sounded like I was the singer in America. I've always liked "Sister Golden Hair" and "Horse With No Name," but I'm not that guy.

Iggy & the Stooges – Raw Power Live available on vinyl and iTunes

If you’ve ever seen the Stooges live, then you know they’re still one of the most ferocious acts on the scene. Which is amazing considering Mike Watt (the band’s current touring bassist) is the youngest “Stooge” at age 53. Last year, Iggy and co. performed the incredible 1973 LP Raw Power in its entirety at All Tomorrow’s Parties, in what I’ve heard was an amazing performance. And now that very performance from last September is available to download on iTunes, as well as to purchase on 180 gram vinyl. MVD Entertainment Group are responsible for the release, as part of their In The Hands of the Fans series.

Their performance at Lollapalooza in 2007, during which I caught Ron Asheton as part of the lineup before his untimely death, still ranks amongst one of my most memorable shows ever. Despite the fact that my girlfriend and I were nearly trampled to death during the stage rush when they played “No Fun,” I still find myself bringing up that show all the time. Long live the Stooges!
