Oh, "Best Of" lists... what would surprise me most would be if there were someday one that everyone unilaterally agreed was 100% correct. But until that day (never) comes, these lists serve as an almost endless source of subjective debate or, at worst, the verbal equivalent of very nerdy street fights.
Our friends over at Slicing Up Eyeballs have tipped us off to the announcement of a new Best Of List by Gibson.com, who over the past month have polled their editors, writers, and readers the eternal-question-without-an-answer: "What is the greatest song of the 1980s?" Once all the votes were in (and a technicality was invoked, apparently), the honor went to The Clash's classic anthem "London Calling" - which came out in the UK in 1979 but in the USA in 1980 so it juuuuust counted.
All timing weirdness aside, it is a great track - would it have been YOUR Number 1 of the decade, though? Hear it again (like you need to) and check out Gibson's official Top 50 list after the jump. You can find the results of their Readers' Poll over here. Quite a few excellent contenders here - if you disagree with their decision, which would you have wanted to take the crown? (And so as not to avoid the question myself, I'm personally partial to #19...)
