Last night at The Bell House, Merge labelmates Hospitality and Eleanor Friedberger shared the stage for what turned out to be a showcase of two of the stronger artists in the indie scene today. I’ve seen Eleanor a couple times in the past, as both a member of Fiery Furnaces and as a solo artist, so I was a little more excited to finally check out Hospitality--whose recent self-titled album released in January has received considerable attention (and plays on my Spotify account). Their live show didn’t disappoint. Frontwoman Amber Papini possesses one of the most satisfyingly unique voices I’ve heard in a while, and the band’s songs exhibit a genuine and playful sense of songwriting. If you haven’t heard their album yet, give it a listen at the bottom of this very post. And prepare to listen to it repeatedly.
Eleanor Friedberger took the stage following Hospitality’s forty-five minute set, opening with an energetic version of “My Mistakes,” the first song on her debut 2011 solo effort Last Summer. I’m always pleased with artists who go out of their way to make their live show sound unique from their recordings, and Eleanor is no exception. Songs such as “Roosevelt Island” and “Scenes from Bensonhurst” were given different arrangements and tempos last night—even different from the last time I saw her—which made for an interesting and exciting set. In the short amount of time since Friedberger released her solo album last July she has emerged as a powerful singer-songwriter in her own rite, proving that her brother can’t take all the responsibility for The Fiery Furnaces being so great.
Both Hospitality and Eleanor will continue their tour together through the middle of May before parting ways on separate dates. Check out both bands' tour dates, both of their most recent albums via Spotify, and a full set of photos of last night's show below...
