Swirlies @ Beekman Beer Garden - July 24th, 2011
It's probably something that's been said before, but I'll say it again since they really did put on a great show yesterday: The Swirlies are a really underrated band. Considering the current popularity of neo-shoegaze acts like Wavves, Best Coast, Male Bonding, Weekend, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Yuck, etc., you'd think the Swirlies would be name-dropped every now and then (or all the time). But I can't personally recall the last time such an instance took place (someone please prove me wrong).
Being their first show in New York City in three years, there was a pretty large crowd at Beekman Beer Garden yesterday to give the band a warm welcome. And as humble as a band the Swirlies come off, they also seemed to be having a lot of fun as they played through their set, even returning for a one song encore to play what is apparently fan favorite "Wrong Tube" (people were shouting it out between every song). Columbus, Ohio "shitgaze" act Psychedelic Horseshit, a band I've read about a lot but never listened to, opened with a short set. The place was still pretty empty throughout their entire set and their frantic lo-fi sound didn't seem to please too many people. Perhaps it just wasn't their day.
Swirlies have no future dates scheduled, but I'm hoping that changes because I'd really love to see them again in a club setting. Below, check out a full set of photos of both bands...
