One thing I'll always defend about the high cost of living in New York City is the overwhelming amount of free entertainment that comes our way during the summer months. It quite easily redeems the absurd amount of money we spend on rent, food and everything else under the sun just to know how often we'll be rewarded with free entertainment. Such was the case on Saturday, during the most beautiful day of the year so far, when Kurt Vile & The Violators and Dawes played a free show at Central Park SummerStage.
Vile, who was once a member of the similarly sounding band The War on Drugs (who released one of our favorite albums in 2011), opened the show--which was a bit confusing because it definitely seemed like most of the crowd was there to see him. Nevertheless, he and his band performed a solid set for about an hour, and towards the end Vile played several songs acoustic-solo. Dawes, who had their fair share of fans in attendance as well, gave an upbeat energetic performance which was in stark contrast to the droning, ambient set Kurt Vile opened with. We had to leave halfway through Dawes' set to make it to the Knitting Factory (more on that in a bit).
